Northwood University students, faculty, and staff voted Steven Hackbarth, of Midland, and Isabella Stephens, of Davison, as the 2025-26 FRESH AIR Ambassadors — the ultimate honor for student leaders who embody Northwood’s values, principles, and Code of Ethics.

The FRESH AIR Code of Ethics — which emphasizes freedom, respect, empathy, spirituality, honesty, achievement, integrity, and responsibility — is central to Northwood’s culture and identity. Each year, FRESH AIR Ambassadors are nominated by both peers and staff for their exceptional character and dedication to these values.

This year’s honorees were announced during halftime of Saturday’s Northwood Football game at Hantz Stadium.

“Steven and Isabella embody the values in our shared institutional philosophy, The Northwood Idea, and our FRESH AIR Code of Ethics,” said Director of Student Life Nancy Hoefer. “They are involved in numerous organizations and leadership roles, and both are known for uplifting their peers and exemplifying integrity and service.”

Steven Hackbarth, of Midland, Michigan, is majoring in Marketing and Marketing Communications with a minor in Digital Marketing. He serves as a Student Life assistant, helping to plan activities and connect students with opportunities. Hackbarth is president of Northwood’s Business Professionals of America, vice president of professional development for Northwood’s American Marketing Association, an executive board member of NU imPACKt, and captain of Team BMW for the Northwood University International Auto Show. An aspiring tech entrepreneur, he hopes to one day launch his own nonprofit.

Isabella Stephens, of Davison, Michigan, is a third-year student in Northwood’s BBA/MBA program. A Marketing major, Stephens has built a strong reputation as a campus leader. She is a resident advisor in Hickory Hall, co-captain of the cheer team, and founder of Woody’s Secret Society. Stephens’ leadership extends beyond campus through her work with Thrive, a program supporting individuals with special needs, and she served as Miss Davison 2023. She is driven by a belief that achievement means lifting others up, creating a culture of positivity, and empowering her peers. “Being selected as a FRESH AIR Ambassador is one of the highest recognitions a student can receive at Northwood,” noted Dean of Student Affairs Andy Cripe. “Steven and Isabella have shown remarkable dedication to their academics, their organizations, and their fellow students. They reflect the very best of our community.”
