Northwood University’s Annual Day of Service Showcases the Power of People Helping People Through Volunteerism, Values, and Leadership

On Friday, Nov. 7, Northwood University students, faculty, and staff will step away from their classes and offices to make a tangible impact across the Great Lakes Bay Region and beyond during Go MAD Day.

Go MAD Day is an annual day of service that is a proud Northwood tradition inspired by the phrase “Go MAD,” which stands for Go Make A Difference. It was coined by the late football coach Pat Riepma, whose “Go MAD” philosophy urged student-athletes and colleagues to make a difference in the lives of others.

“What began as an athletics mantra has evolved into a lasting reflection of Northwood’s Code of Ethics,” stated President MacDonald. “Go MAD Day is a living expression of the values that define who we are as an academic community. For several decades, it has embodied empathy, responsibility, and respect in action. Together, these values inspire the Northwood community to make a difference that reaches far beyond campus on Go MAD Day and every day.”

A Day of Service That Multiplies Good Across Michigan

In recent years, Go MAD Day has generated nearly 1,400 hours of community service in a single day, benefiting dozens of organizations and hundreds of individuals across Midland County. This year’s participation is expected to exceed past records.

“We’ve significantly increased the number of volunteers this year, and I couldn’t be prouder,” said Dean of Student Affairs Andy Cripe. “Go MAD Day unites the entire Northwood family — whether or not they knew Coach Riepma — around a shared belief that leadership and service go hand in hand. His legacy lives on each time we serve our community and challenge ourselves to make a difference every day.”

Rooted in athletics, Go MAD continues to thrive thanks to strong engagement from every Northwood sports team. “What began in our locker rooms has become a campus-wide movement,” said Athletics Director Jeff Curtis. “Seeing today’s student-athletes lead alongside classmates, faculty, and staff is proof that Pat’s mantra wasn’t just a rallying cry — it’s a way of life.”

A Force for Good in the Great Lakes Bay Region

Northwood’s commitment to volunteerism extends well beyond one day of service. According to an independent 2024 economic impact study, Northwood University’s total economic contribution reached $879.3 million statewide, including $211.8 million in the Great Lakes Bay Region, supporting more than 10,000 jobs across Michigan. Of that total, the work of Northwood’s student and employee volunteers alone generated $1.3 million in added income for the state economy and supported nearly 40 jobs in 2022-23.

“The ripple effect of volunteerism can be seen in the prosperity and resilience of the Great Lakes Bay Region,” said Justin Marshall, Northwood’s chief development and engagement officer. “When our students and colleagues serve — in schools, nonprofits, and neighborhoods — they’re contributing to the economic and social vitality that strengthens communities across Michigan.”

A Legacy That Inspires Generations

This year’s Go MAD Day carries added meaning as it unfolds amid the public phase of Northwood’s historic When We Are Free comprehensive campaign, which seeks to expand scholarships, increase endowed professorships, enhance learning spaces, and amplify programs that advance ethical free enterprise leadership.

“Go MAD Day exemplifies what our campaign celebrates — freedom, opportunity, initiative, and community,” said Vice President of Advancement Murray Kyte. “As we rally support for Northwood’s mission, we also invite alumni and friends to join us in giving back — whether through volunteerism, mentorship, or philanthropy. Together, we make a difference.”
