Applying for Financial Aid

Getting Started

To be considered for any need-based financial aid (including student loans), you are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Create an FSA ID

The FSA ID, a username and password, has replaced the Federal Student Aid PIN and must be used to log in to certain U.S. Department of Education websites. Your FSA ID confirms your identity when you access your financial aid information and electronically sign Federal Student Aid documents. If you do not already have an FSA ID, you can create one when logging in to, the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) at or or by going directly to

In order to create an ID, you must have a valid email address. You will create a username and password along with answer questions regarding name, date of birth, Social Security number, contact information and challenge questions and answers. You will receive an email secure code to verify the information before proceeding to the website.

If you have never had a PIN or FSA ID before, it will take up to 72 hours to activate for you to electronically sign the FAFSA. We suggest you create an FSA ID as soon as possible.

Complete the FAFSA

We encourage you to apply online at Applying online normally reduces processing time. Help is available. If you prefer a paper FAFSA application, you may request one from the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1.800.4.FED.AID.

Apply as soon as possible after October 1 of each year. Northwood encourages undergraduate students who reside in the state of Michigan to apply earlier than the state aid deadline of March 1. Read more about your state aid deadline on the FAFSA website.

If you have questions when completing your FAFSA, you can get free help by contacting the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1.800.4.FED.AID (1-800-433-3243) or by contacting the Northwood Financial Aid Office at 989.837.4230. If you are using FAFSA on the web, you can also get help online.

Complete Your FAFSA

Northwood University School Code for the FAFSA

The school code is 004072. You will locate our school under the State of Michigan.

What’s Next?

After you have submitted your FAFSA to the federal government for processing, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). Review the information. Follow any instructions on the SAR. Be sure Northwood’s school code is on the SAR. You may find that your SAR has been selected for verification. If so, you will be receiving a letter from the Financial Aid Office requesting additional information.

Before the Financial Aid Office is able to offer you financial assistance, you must have applied for admissions, provided a valid social security number on the Northwood application (this is not required for admission but is required for us to connect your FAFSA and your NU account properly) and been accepted for enrollment at Northwood. After you have been accepted and the Financial Aid Office has received your SAR from the Department of Education and any requested documentation from you, the Financial Aid Office will mail you an award letter. The award letter will notify you of the types and amounts of aid that you may receive. You will also be able to view your award information at

Remember, the Financial Aid Office is here to serve you. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.
