Three student-organized events offer friendly competition while providing hands-on experience in sport event management.
Northwood University Sport Management students are putting classroom lessons into practice while inviting the community to participate in three upcoming fundraisers featuring bowling, pickleball and curling.
Students are organizing Bowl Timbys on Friday, Nov. 20, at Northern Lanes; The Big Dill Bash pickleball tournament on Friday, Dec. 4, at the Greater Midland Tennis Center; and the Timberwolves Curling Classic on Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Midland Curling Club. The three events will support Northwood’s Sport Management program.
Beyond bringing people together, the events offer students opportunities to gain practical experience in event planning, marketing, logistics and community engagement.
“One of the most valuable things we can do for our students is give them opportunities to take what they’re learning in the classroom and apply it in the real world,” said Professor Dave Marsh, who chairs Northwood’s Sport Management program. “These events are student-driven, which means students are gaining firsthand experience with the responsibilities and challenges of organizing successful sporting events. At the same time, they’re creating opportunities for Northwood and the community to come together, have fun and support future sport industry professionals.”
Bowl Timbys set for Nov. 20 at Northern Lanes

Participants can register in teams of four for an evening of bowling, giveaways, prizes and other activities. The registration fee includes three games of bowling, shoe rental and a taco bar.

The Big Dill Bash is Dec. 4 at Greater Midland Tennis Center
Northwood students will host The Big Dill Bash, a pickleball tournament, from 4 to 8 p.m. Dec. 4 at the Greater Midland Tennis Center.
The tournament will feature 16 doubles teams competing in four pools during round-robin play. Top finishers will advance to a single-elimination bracket to determine the tournament champion.
The format is designed to provide multiple games for participating teams while welcoming players of varying experience levels.
“We wanted to create a night where students and community members can get on the court together,” said Dylan Pampreen, a member of the student organizing team. “Pickleball is easy to learn and a lot of fun to play, so it is a great way to meet new people and enjoy an evening out.”
Registration is $20 per student team and $40 per nonstudent team. Space is limited to 16 teams, and early registration is encouraged.
Teams can register online at https://events.hometownticketing.com/boxoffice/northwood.
