New Enhancements Await Winter Wonderland Visitors, Starting Dec. 9

November 19, 2025
Two decorated horses pull a lit-up wagon with people on board at night, near a Northwestern University sign and a small pavilion—capturing the spirit of Winter Wonderland enhancements on Dec. 9.

New enhancements will make this year’s Winter Wonderland festivities at Northwood University more accessible for families across Midland and the region, starting Dec. 9, 2025.

“Winter Wonderland has become a beloved Northwood tradition that captures the heart of our mission by welcoming families, celebrating the season, and giving back to the community we call home,” said President Kent MacDonald. “The generosity that makes this event possible also fuels scholarships, programs, and outreach that uplift our region. As we move forward with the When We Are Free campaign, this year’s celebration serves as a festive reminder of the extraordinary impact we can create together. Our beautiful campus is the perfect backdrop for the occasion, and all are welcome to visit.”

To reduce wait times and accommodate increased attendance, a second horse-drawn wagon will be a new addition to all Winter Wonderland ride nights, explained Laura Rhodes, director of annual giving and Winter Wonderland’s chief planner.

“The university will also offer students a preview on Monday, Nov. 24, when horse-drawn wagons will be available to taxi Timberwolves to and from classes,” Rhodes stated. “It will be a whimsical kickoff to the season and a nod to the magic that’s still to come, starting Dec. 9 and then continuing on Dec. 11, Dec. 16, and Dec. 18.”

“Thousands of people visit campus each December for Winter Wonderland — making this a cherished holiday tradition and one of Northwood’s commitments to being Midland’s University,” explained Justin Marshall, chief development and engagement officer. “Proceeds ensure Northwood remains a vibrant hub of learning, leadership, and opportunity for students and families throughout Midland and beyond.”

Rhodes said this year’s updates were shaped by feedback from families and sponsors.

“Adding a second wagon was a top request,” Rhodes said. “Our goal is simple: make the event enjoyable for as many families as possible, and ensure the experience remains something the community looks forward to each year.”

The Winter Wonderland Kickoff Celebration starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9. Other Winter Wonderland dates for 2025 are Thursday, Dec. 11; Tuesday, Dec. 16; and Thursday, Dec. 18. All Winter Wonderland dates will feature sponsored horse and wagon rides from 6 to 8 p.m., as well as crafts and light refreshments in the Four Seasons Space on the Mall Walk near the Abraham Lincoln statue.
