Northwood University is once again partnering with the City of Midland to welcome community members to campus as part of the annual Walk Midland program, June 2 to Aug. 4, 2026.

Northwood will serve as a Tuesday Walk Midland destination, hosting walkers at noon on its scenic, paved campus route near the corner of West Main Street and University Avenue.

Walk Midland is organized by the City of Midland to encourage residents to stay active by participating in two-mile walks at various locations throughout the community. The program offers residents a simple way to enjoy fresh air, connect with others, and explore some of Midland’s parks, trails and community spaces.

At Northwood, participants will have the opportunity to experience one of Midland’s most distinctive outdoor settings — a wooded campus known for its rolling hills, walking paths and public art — while also seeing a newly completed outdoor gathering space adjacent to Griswold Communications Center.

Funded by support from the Thomas F. and Harriet S. Oakley Family Trust to Northwood’s When We Are Free comprehensive fundraising campaign, the new Griswold-adjacent space is designed to welcome students, faculty, campus visitors and community members. The area features a new walking path, a small bridge, landscape enhancements and prominent quotations from Benjamin Franklin, Rose Wilder Lane, Milton Friedman and Henry David Thoreau.

“Northwood is proud to be Midland’s University, and Walk Midland is one of the many ways we open our campus to the community we are fortunate to call home,” said Justin Marshall, chief development and engagement officer for Northwood University. “Whether someone is returning to campus or visiting for the first time, this is a great opportunity to enjoy a beautiful walk, connect with neighbors and see the momentum building at Northwood.”

Campus strollers also will get a glimpse of the university’s next chapter, as construction begins on a new academic center and conference facility in place of the NADA Hotel and Conference Center. Additional project details and renderings for the Wildstein Learning and Academic Center will be shared in June. The project is part of Northwood’s ongoing investment in spaces that will support students, faculty, alumni, community partners and visitors for generations to come.

“Walk Midland reflects the kind of community connection that makes Midland special,” Marshall added. “We want residents to feel welcome here — not just for special events, but throughout the year. This summer, walkers will have the chance to enjoy a beautiful campus, see a new gathering space created for our community and get a glimpse of the exciting progress ahead at Northwood.”

Walkers are encouraged to arrive a few minutes early to register and check in before the walk begins. Participants should follow City of Midland Walk Midland guidance regarding registration, prize drawings and schedule updates.
