Students win Michigan Accountancy Foundation scholarships

May 6, 2024

Two Northwood University students are among the newest scholarship recipients from the Michigan Accountancy Foundation (MAF).

MAF provides scholarships for fifth year and graduate accounting students who are aspiring to become certified public accountants. Every year, more than $45,000 is awarded. This year, nine scholarships were awarded, and two of the recipients are from Northwood University:  Wilson Bragg of Gladwin and Kara Cotton of Midland.

“Wilson and Kara are excellent examples of the talent and work commitment embodied by our students here at Northwood,” stated Kevin Jajo, who chairs the Accounting Degree Program. “We couldn’t be more proud of this pair.”

“This scholarship allows me to continue my educational journey with the ultimate goal of becoming a certified public accountant (CPA),” Cotton stated. “I am so grateful to MAF for supporting me in this next step of my life. It feels very good to know my extreme dedication to my education and career is starting to pay off.”

Bragg noted this scholarship will help him earn his master of business administration — and the additional credits needed to earn his CPA license.

“I am extremely grateful for this opportunity, and I am sure I will make the Michigan Accountancy Foundation proud,” Bragg said.

Accounting is one of Northwood University’s largest degree programs. According to the latest Alumni Survey data, 72% of Northwood’s accounting graduates are employed in an accounting position, and over one in three Northwood graduates own their own business.

“Every industry needs accountants, and part of the appeal of our program is that students can earn the amount of credits necessary to obtain CPA licensure before graduating,” Jajo stated. “Also, we recognize that accounting transcends mere number-crunching. It unveils the narrative of a business, and we equip our students to become exceptional storytellers.”

Bragg said he enjoys studying accounting at Northwood University because the small class sizes helps him make connections with his peers and professors.

“I also enjoy the industry knowledge our professors can share with us through their own career experiences,” Bragg added.

“I have enjoyed my experience at Northwood University because of the wonderful professors who have prepared me well for the real world as I get ready to enter the accounting industry,” Cotton added.
