Northwood’s Competitive Speech Team Competes at Novice States

The Northwood University Competitive Speech Team novices (first-year competitors) competed on February 8 at Novice States Speech Championships hosted by Hillsdale College and the Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League (MISL). The novices took on tough competition from all across Michigan but really showed their talent by taking 4th place. This brings the total number of wins up to 53 for the season.Cherell Granger, a sophomore from Gaylord, captured the title of Novice State Champion in informative speaking. Results of other team members are: Trisha Oberlee, a freshman from Otter Lake, placed 5th in after dinner speaking; Amber Osburn, a sophomore from Tecumseh, placed 5th in both prose and poetry; Miranda Kennedy, a sophomore from Unionville, placed 3rd in after dinner speaking and 5th in extemporaneous speaking; and Cherell Granger also placed 4th in extemporaneous speaking and 5th in impromptu.

All team members will participate on February 22-23 at the Forensics is Beachin’ tournament hosted by Bowling Green University. The following weekend, February 28-March 1, begins the championship season with state finals in Mt. Pleasant hosted by Central Michigan University and the Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League.
