Northwood University Michigan Students Give Detroit Pistons End-of-Season Ticket Sales Boost

March 21, 2014

Seniors majoring in Entertainment, Sport & Promotion Management Program get hands-on training in group ticket sales; will celebrate efforts at “Northwood Night at the Palace” during Pistons-Celtics game on April 5Students in Northwood University’s Entertainment, Sport & Promotion Management (ESPM) degree program don’t just learn the tricks of the trade by sitting through classroom lectures. These aspiring marketers at the Midland, Michigan-based university get real-world, hands-on experience in the sports and entertainment industries, thanks to the school’s proximity to Detroit.

This semester, the ESPM senior seminar class, led by Assistant Professor Dr. Preston James IV, has had the unique opportunity to work in the Detroit Pistons group ticket sales program at the Palace of Auburn Hills, the NBA team’s home court. Six groups of Northwood students are competitively selling tickets against one another throughout the season.

This friendly match-up will culminate in a special celebration of their efforts and also of the University at Northwood Night at the Place on April 5 during the 7:30 p.m. game between the Pistons and the Boston Celtics.

The Northwood University ESPM program invites all current students, alumni, faculty and their family and friends to purchase tickets at discounted rates and support the ESPM senior seminar class in its ticket sales efforts. The top Northwood ticket sales team will be recognized via “Palace Vision” during halftime and will participate in a team photo at center court after the game.

Tickets for Northwood Night at the Palace cost $30 for lower level seating, $15 for upper level and can be purchased by calling 248.377.8620. Callers should indicate they are purchasing for the Northwood Night at the Palace promotion and if there is a specific student or selling team that should get the sales credit.

“These special tickets are less than the Pistons’ advertised prices and a great way to support our ESPM seniors,” James says. “Spread the word to friends and family about buying tickets for this event. We want to pack the Palace on April 5.”

The Northwood University Bachelor of Business Administration in Entertainment, Sport & Promotion Management (ESPM) is unique in that it is designed to challenge and develop a student’s interest across the interconnected areas of entertainment, sports and promotions management starting in their freshman year, in and out of a classroom setting. The degree is offered at the University’s main campus in Michigan and also at its Florida residential campus in West Palm Beach.

“Our ESPM students have been able to find many exciting careers when they graduate from Northwood,” James says. “We have students working for such high-profile organizations as the Detroit Red Wings, Orlando Magic, NASCAR, the U.S. Olympic Committee, Miami Dolphins and the San Diego Chargers. Students come to Northwood University because we offer specialized business degrees, real-world experience in those fields of study and excellent placement rates after graduation. Our ESPM program is no exception.”
