On Wednesday, February 5, at 7 p.m., Northwood University’s Forum for Citizenship & Enterprise will host Barbara Elliott who will discuss the topic “Reweaving the Tattered Fabric of Civil Society.” The lecture will take place in room 114 of the Sloan Family Building for Aftermarket Studies on Northwood University’s Midland campus located at 4000 Whiting Drive. Students, alumni, faculty, staff and members of the community are invited to attend this free event.Elliott is the founder of the Center for Cultural Renewal, a resource center she founded for faith-based organizations working to renew the cities of America, and the WorkFaith Connection. She is a professor in the Honors College of Houston Baptist University where she teaches on the True, the Good and the Beautiful. The Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology presented her the Doctor of Humane Letters degree, honoris causa, and inducted her into the College of Fellows in 2006.
She was awarded the Eleanor Roosevelt Award for Human Rights in 2001 by President George W. Bush for her work with refugees and the poor. Elliott has served as an analyst on faith-based and community initiatives and is the author of many articles on civic renewal. She has served as a Senior Fellow with the Hudson Institute and Associate Fellow for the Sagamore Institute, is a philanthropic advisor with the Legacy Group and lecturer for the Catherine of Siena Institute.
Elliott received a bachelor of arts degree in English literature and fine arts from Ohio Wesleyan University and earned her master of arts in theology at the University of St. Thomas in Houston. She is currently a doctoral candidate at Faulkner University where she is studying Humane Letters in the Great Books.
