Northwood bests SVSU in competition to help veterans

December 8, 2023

Northwood University is the victor in a friendly competition waged with Saginaw Valley State University to collect personal hygiene goods for military veterans.

“This was a really fun way to collaborate with our friends at Saginaw Valley while supporting a great cause,” stated Dr. Christie McDonald, the director of financial aid for Northwood University who led the collection effort at Northwood. “At the end of the day, the real winners are our veterans. We are all grateful for their service, and proud to support them in any way we can.”

“We are grateful to have these two local universities work so hard to raise donations for our Fill the Trailer project,” stated Brad Blanchard, director of the Great Lakes Bay Veterans Coalition. “This project supplies personal hygiene items to homeless and low-income veterans and their families.”

The Saginaw VA distributes over 80 hygiene kits per month to help those who have served, and the program helps veterans from the mid-Michigan area all the way to the Mackinac Bridge.

Each item collected granted the respective school 1 point, and items were collected through Nov. 30. At the end of the campaign, Northwood donated 1,300 items, which was 200 more than raised by the competition.

For more than 40 years, Northwood University has provided voluntary education programs to our nation’s service members, veterans and military family members. Recently, Northwood was recognized as a Veteran-Friendly School for the 2023-24 school year by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency.
