Mock Trial Season Results 2015-2016

December 11, 2015

Students on the Northwood University Mock Trial teams won multiple awards at the Fall Invitational Tournaments they attended.

In their very first tournament of the season, returning senior Jalisa Harris, a Management major from Bellville, Michigan earned her first Outstanding Attorney Award at the Invitational Tournament hosted by MSU on October 18, 2015. At the second tournament of the season, (which was sponsored by OSU) returning junior and Marketing Major Cameron Wheeler won his first Outstanding Witness Award. On November 15, 2015, at the Invitational Tournament sponsored by Duke University, NU earned the award for exemplifying the ideals of honesty, civility and fair play, called the Brightleaf Award. At the November 22, 2015 EMU Invitational Tournament, freshman Chris Grant, an Economics major from Florida, earned his first Outstanding Attorney Award.

Northwood’s most successful team results came at the Invitational Tournament sponsored by the University of Virginia on November 22, 2015. This tournament was one of the few fall tournaments that provided three scoring judges for each round. In round one NU defeated Baylor on all three ballots. In round two NU defeated Princeton on two of three ballots. In round three, NU won one of three ballots against five-time National Champion University of Maryland and lost the final round of the tournament to two-time National Champion University of Virginia.

The final invitational tournament attended by NU in the fall of 2015 was sponsored by Yale and featured two scoring judges for each round. NU lost both ballots in round one to UVA, but came back in round two against MD, where NU won a ballot and MD won a ballot. That trend continued in round 3 when NU won a ballot and Emory won a ballot and the final round of the fall season was a very hard fought battle where NU lost by just one point on one ballot and lost by 5 points on the other (out of a possible 140 points).

The remaining invitational tournaments for this academic year will occur in January 2016. The student members scheduled to compete in January include the following: Marlies Kleckner-Alt; Raphael Canty; D T. Ameir Dunn; Tyler Fay; Christopher Grant; Malik Green; Jalisa Harris; Chelsea Howe; Eric Johnson; Jonathon Makarewicz; Zachary Messner; Amelia Monsalvo; Devon Peasley; William Rodgers; Mia Serrano; Cameron Wheeler; and Emily Wichmann.
