Mock Trial Season Results 2011-2012

April 13-15, 2012

In the Twin Cities of Minnesota, the American Mock Trial Association held its 2012 National Championship Tournament.

Team 930 faced Brown University, Rhodes College, Miami-Ohio, and Cal-Berkeley. The team of Ibrahim Lawton, Stephanie Hentschel, Patrick Wixson, Amanda Riley, Nikita Setia, and Yancy Cobb won honorable mention as part of the placing in the top 13 in their division.

Team 931 faced the University of Michigan, University of Virginia, Eastern Kentucky University, and Harvard. The team consisted of John Hardison, Matt Williams, Jon Spagnuolo, Meghan Ewald, Myisha Ishmeal, Vince Davis, Nathaniel Breznau, Harindu Fernando and Katie West.

In addition to the team’s success, three NU students won individual awards. Seniors John Hardison and Patrick Wixson, each earned an All-American Attorney Award. Junior Yancy Cobb earned an All-American Witness Award.

All participants in the NCT are to be congratulated for their demonstration of elite communication and critical thinking skills inside the courtroom, as well as the network of friendships they develop outside the courtroom.

Two Northwood Mock Trial Teams joined 22 other teams competing at the ORCS held at the Lake County Courthouse in Waukegan, IL.

Team 930 faced teams from Notre Dame, Lewis, the University of Minnesota-Morris, and Macalester. The team of Yancy Cobb, Terrence Green, Aaron Grace, Stephanie Hentschel, Ibrahim Lawton, Amanda Riley, Nikita Setia, Imasha Harindhu Merrennage and Patrick Wixson finished with a record of 7-1 and placed third at the tournament. Ibrahim Lawton won an outstanding attorney award.

Team 931 faced teams from Notre Dame, Lewis, the University of Illinois-Chicago and Hamline. The team of Nathaniel Breznau, Vince Davis, John Hardison, Myisha Ishmeal, Meghan Ewald, Andrew Lemek, Jonathan Spagnuolo, Kathleen West and Matthew Williams finished with a record of 5-3 and finished fifth place at the tournament. Vince Davis won a 20 rank outstanding witness award.

Both teams earned bids to compete at the National Championship Tournament. Northwood was one of five schools in the nation to qualify two teams to attend.

February 25-26, 2012

Two Northwood Mock Trial Teams joined 22 other teams competing at the Regional Tournament held on the campus of Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana this past weekend.

Team 931 finished with a record of 7-1 after seeing Kenyon College, Manchester, the University of Chicago, and Northwestern. The team of Paige Buckley, Vince Davis, Myisha Ishmeal, Meghan Ewald, Stephanie Hentschel, Andrew Lemek, Jonathan Spagnuolo and Kathleen West took 3rd place at the tournament. Stephanie Hentschel received an outstanding attorney award on the prosecution and defense side the case and received the most overall ranks at the tournament, and Vince Davis was selected to win an outstanding witness award.

Team 930 finished with a record of 6-2 after seeing the University of Illinois-Chicago, two teams from Loyola Chicago, and Hillsdale. The team of Yancy Cobb, John Hardison, Ibrahim Lawton, Amanda Riley, Nikita Setia, Imasha Harindhu Merrennage and Patrick Wixson took 4th place at the tournament. Nikita Setia earned an outstanding witness award by earning a perfect ranking score. Amanda Riley also earn an outstanding witness award.

Because both teams placed in the top eight, they earned bids to compete at the Opening Round of Championships held in March.

February 18-19, 2012

Team 932, NU’s novice team competed at the Joliet, IL Regional Tournament. The team of Matt Williams, Terrence Green, Aaron Grace, T. C. Sample, Mike Ciesielski, Nathaniel Breznau, and Joshua Campbell saw the University of Chicago, Lake Forest, Bradley University, and Carthage College. Team captain and freshman, Matt Williams, earned a 20 rank outstanding attorney award.

January 28-29, 2012

This weekend Northwood sent one team to SOBEIT hosted by the University of Miami.

Team 930 faced Northwestern, University of California- Berkeley, Hamline, and the University of California- Irvine. The team of Yancy Cobb, Vince Davis, John Hardison, Ibrahim Lawton, Amanda Riley, Nikita Setia, Patrick Wixson won the Spirit of AMTA (Dr. Glen A. Halva-Neubauer Professionalism Award) award for the second straight year at SOBEIT. Both Patrick Wixson and Ibrahim Lawton earned honorable mention outstanding attorney awards.

Northwood also sent two separate teams to attend the Great Lakes Invitational hosted by Eastern Michigan University.

Team 931 saw teams from the University of Chicago, Bowling Green, Hillsdale, and Northwestern. The team consisted of Paige Buckley, Jon Spagnuolo, Stephanie Hentschel, Alyssa Studebaker, Myisha Ishmeal, Andy Lemek and Meghan Ewald. Stephanie Hentschel earned an outstanding attorney award.

Team 932 saw teams from the University of Cincinnati, SUNY- Oneonta, Ohio State, and Loyola-Chicago. The team consisted of Mike Ciesielski, Matt Williams, Terry Green, Nathaniel Breznau, Katie West, Josh Campbell, TC Sample, and Aaron Grace. Nathaniel Breznau earned an outstanding witness award.

January 21-23,2012

Only 16 teams were invited to attend New York University’s Downtown Invitational tournament. Northwood added another trophy to its collection by winning 6th place.

Team 930 faced Furman, University of California-Berkeley, NYU, and University of Washington. The team of Yancy Cobb, John Hardison, Meghan Ewald, Stephanie Hentschel, Myisha Ishmeal, Ibrahim Lawton, Amanda Riley, and Patrick Wixson finished with a 6th place finish.

In addition to the team success, senior Patrick Wixson, who had the fourth highest number of ranking points in the tournament, won an outstanding attorney award.

January 14-15, 2012

Thirty four teams attended this Ohio Northern University’s Polar Bear Invitational in Ada, OH. Northwood sent two teams to compete.

Team 931 saw teams from University of Central Florida, Miami-Ohio, and two teams from Eastern Michigan University. Captained by Stephanie Hentschel & Jon Spagnuolo, the team of Nathan Breznau, Paige Buckley, Vince Davis, Meghan Ewald, Stephanie Hentschel, Nikita Setia, Jon Spagnuolo, and Alyssa Studebaker finished with a record of 5-3 and placed 10th. Vince Davis won an outstanding witness award.

Team 932 saw the University of Chicago, University of Pittsburgh, Michigan State, and Elon University. Captained by Matt Williams & Mike Ciesielski, the team consisted of TC Sample, Aaron Grace, John Hardison, Terry Green, Josh Campbell, and Andy Lemek.

The sixteenth annual Yale University Mock Trial Invitational took place this past weekend. NU sent two teams to compete in two separate divisions.

Team 930 finished with a record of 5-6-1 after rounds against Wellesly College, Boston University, Fordham, and Yale. NU students in this division were led by captains Patrick Wixson and Stephanie Hentschel, and the rest of the team included Terrence Green, Michael Ciesielski, Yancy Cobb, Amanda Riley and Jon Spagnuolo.

Team 931 finished with a record of 4-7-1 after rounds against University of Miami, Florida State University, George Washington, and Penn State University. NU students in this division were led by captains Paige Buckley and Matt Williams, and the rest of the team included Aaron Grace, TC Sample, Myisha Ishmeal, Meghan Ewald, and Andrew Lemek.

November 19-20, 2011

This past weekend Northwood University sent two teams to compete at the Mock Trial Invitational Tournament hosted by the University of Pittsburgh.

Team 930 placed 3rd after rounds against University of Michigan, Georgetown, Bellarmine, and University of Pittsburgh.

Team 931 saw the University of Pittsburgh, two teams from Eastern Kentucky University, and a bye-buster team. Vince Davis won an outstanding witness award.

November 5-6, 2011

Northwood University was invited once again to compete at the Great American Mock Trial Invitational hosted by the University of Virginia.

Team 930 was challenged first round by Brown University, and then saw Washington & Lee, University of California- Santa Cruz, and the University of Washington. The team of Yancy Cobb, John Hardison, Stephanie Hentschel, Myisha Ishmeal, Ibrahim Lawton, Amanda Riley, Jon Spagnuolo, Matt Williams and Patrick Wixson won 6.5 ballots, giving them a 9th place finish. Amanda Riley received an outstanding witness award by earning the highest number of ranking points overall at the tournament.

This tournament was limited to only 24 teams. Of those teams, 5 of them were from one of the 15 schools that have previously won a National Mock Trial Championship. The remaining teams included 5 additional teams that have been a National Runner-up (Columbia, Harvard, Northwestern, George Washington University and Georgetown)–as well as many other terrific schools that have earned a bid to the annual National Championship Tournament within the last two years (such as the University of Michigan, Yale, Swarthmore, University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Georgia and Loyola-Chicago).

October 29-30, 2011

During the last weekend of October, Northwood University sent three teams to compete at the Spartan Throwdown Tournament hosted by Case Western Reserve University.

Team 930 faced two University of Chicago teams, Eastern Michigan, and Buffalo. The team of Josh Campbell, Jenna Moeggenborg, Mike Ciesielski, Yancy Cobb, Meghan Ewald, Terrence Green, Matt Williams and captain Patrick Wixson finished with a record of 2-4-2. Patrick Wixson also won an outstanding attorney award.

Team 931 saw the University of Chicago, Carnegie Mellon, Case Western, and Bowling Green. The team of Bryan Lawton, Alyssa Studebaker, Myisha Ishmeal, Amanda Riley, TC Sample and captain Stephanie Hentschel finished with a record of 3-4-1. Myisha Ishmeal won an outstanding witness award.

Team 932 faced teams from Baldwin Wallace, Bowling Green, University of Michigan, and St. Louis University. Team members Jon Spagnuolo, Paige Buckley, Aaron Grace, Katie West, Vince Davis, Andrew Lemek and captain John Hardison finished with a record of 6-2, giving them a 5th place finish out of 28 teams. John Hardison won an outstanding attorney award and Vince Davis won an outstanding witness award.

October 15-16, 2011

Northwood kicked off the 2011-2012 season by sending three teams to Ohio State’s Scarlet and Grey Invitational tournament in Columbus, Ohio.

Team 930 captained Patrick Wixson along with team members Josh Campbell, Mike Ciesielski, Yancy Cobb, Meghan Ewald, Terrence Green & Matt Williams faced two Ohio Northern teams, Miami-Ohio, & Loyola Chicago, finishing the weekend with a 4-4 record. Patrick Wixson won an outstanding attorney award and Yancy Cobb won an outstanding witness award.

Team 931 captained by Stephanie Hentschel along with team members Paige Buckley, Alyssa Studebaker, Myisha Ishmeal, Amanda Riley and TC Sample faced Ohio State, two teams from Michigan State, and Miami-Ohio to finish with a record of 3-5.

Team 932 captained by John Hardison along with team members Andy Lemek, Jon Spagnuolo, Vince Davis, Aaron Grace, Bryan Lawton & Katie West faced two teams from Ohio State and two teams from University of Illinois to finished with a record of 4-4. Jon Spagnuolo won an outstanding witness award.
