Competitive Speech Team Finishes Four Recent Competitions in Preparation for Final Tournament

The Northwood University Competitive Speech Team has recently competed in four tournaments leading back to late February.  Below are the results broken down by contest, with top Northwood placements.Game of Thrones; Bowling Green, OH:

Two “Game of Thrones”-themed tournaments were held on consecutive days on February 27th and 28th at Bowling Green State University.  On the first day where the team placed 11th, two team members made it to the finals in their events with the respective finishes:

  • Chene Kushmaul- 3rd in Extemporaneous Speaking, 6th in Impromptu, 2nd place speaker award in Individual Events Sweepstakes.
  • Cameron Simmons- 6th in Programmed Oral Interpretation

The following day reflected positive progression as the team finished in 8th place and all team members made it to the finals.  Below are the results of the three team members:

  • Chene Kushmaul- 2nd in Extemporaneous Speaking
  • Cameron Simmons- 3rd in programmed Oral Interpretation, 6th in Duo
  • Heather Baker- 6th in Duo

Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League’s State Championship; Ypsilanti, MI:

The next stop for the team was a weekend visit to Eastern Michigan University, as they competed in the state championship tournament on March 12th, and 13th, placing 6th in the State.  Below are the results from the weekend:

  • Chene Kushmaul- 6th in Extemporaneous Speaking
  • Cameron Simmons- 6th in Programmed Oral Interpretation

Pi Kappa Delta National Championship; Lexington, KY:

Most recently, the team competed in a national tournament at the University of Kentucky from March 18th-20th.  The team finished 52nd as a whole, and Chene Kushmaul received an Excellent Award in Impromptu Speaking, given to the top 30% of competitors in an event.

The Timberwolves will complete their season at the National Forensics Association’s National Tournament, hosted by Ball State University, in Muncie, Indiana.
