American Government Students Gain Insight Regarding Legislative Roles in Local Government

November 5, 2014

Northwood University American Government students recently gained additional insight relating to legislative roles by visiting with City of West Palm Beach legislative members and from a classroom presentation from a Palm Beach County commissioner.

On a field trip to the City of West Palm Beach legislature, the group was able to speak with West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio, Commissioners Isaac Robinson, Shanon Materio, Kimberly Mitchell, Keith James and Sylvia Moffitt, and City Manager Jeff Greene. The commissioners shared with the students the role of the City Legislature in local government.

Students were also able to learn the perspectives of Palm Beach County Commissioner Paulette Burdick, who shared her motivations to become a public servant along with the ways in which she believes local government creates positive change through grassroots-level legislative practices and formulation.

The Northwood University Introduction to American Government Class (PSC 2010) focuses on the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of American government while studying the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, federalism, political parties, the federal bureaucracy, elections, interest groups, and more.
