2023 Day of Giving focused on students

April 27, 2023

Thanks to a large number of alumni and other generous donors, Northwood University raised nearly $85,000 through its annual Day of Giving campaign.

“We are so thankful to each and every one of the hundreds of donors who supported this year’s Day of Giving,” stated President Kent MacDonald. “These donors know America needs more institutions like Northwood University, which provides a values-based education guided by The Northwood Idea.”

The Day of Giving is held annually on March 23. This is a special date to the Northwood University community, as it is our Founders’ Day, in honor of co-founders Arthur Turner and Gary Stauffer.

“Each Northwood’s Founders’ Day, our community joins together to give back,” stated Murray Kyte, vice president of advancement. “We rally around The Northwood Idea as we continue to expand the reach of this timeless set of values, including free enterprise, entrepreneurism, limited government, and liberty for all.”

This year’s Day of Giving looked different from prior years in that donors could pick specific programs to support, including all academic programs, athletics and student scholarships.

“We had great support from our partners on campus as well, including a generous matching gift of $35,000 from our Board of Trustees,” stated Laura Rhodes, director of annual giving. “Our students also had the opportunity to have some intimate conversations with Northwood alumnus Chris Clements, senior vice president and chief financial officer for the Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium.”

Clements has had a very storied career, and he currently is a finalist for CFO of the Year in South Florida across all industries. The Hard Rock Stadium is hosting the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix on May 5-7, and it was just named New Sporting Event of the Year.

Students were grateful to network with Clements, who shared that he was a scholarship recipient when he attended Northwood. Now he gives back to his alma mater — and he encouraged others to do the same while he visited Northwood’s campus during this year’s Day of Giving.

During this year’s Day of Giving, 271 donors raised a combined $84,365.39. Donors came from four different countries and 31 different states. Over half — 167 — were alumni.

“We saw widespread support this year during our annual Day of Giving and our 64th Founder’s Day,” Rhodes added. “Thanks to everyone who supported Northwood University and The Northwood Idea.”
