Mary Ellen Chumley

Mary Ellen Chumley was born in Bloomington, Indiana, graduated from Vassar College and was awarded a fellowship in art history at Indiana University. She had a vast interest in Americana, history, furniture and decorative arts. As a member of the National Society of the Colonial Dames in Indiana, she helped to furnish the Period Rooms of the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Mrs. Chumley served as national treasurer and financial advisor of the National Society of Arts and Letters. She was national art chairman and a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and the Vassar Club of Indiana. Her many interesting years of service included membership on the staff of the Cincinnati Art Museum and work as a cartographer and senior editor for the Army Map Service of the US Corps of Engineers during the Allied invasions of World War II. She was a volunteer and board member for the Friends of Art at Indiana University, Bloomington Library Foundation and Monroe County School Foundation. She was also a recreation worker for the American Red Cross at Maxwell Field in Alabama. She is listed in the Who’s Who of Women, World’s Who’s Who and the Dictionary of International Biography. She served as director and chair of Bank One, Columbus, Ohio, the National Council of the Metropolitan Opera, Friends of the Kennedy Foundation and Friends of the State Department Diplomatic Rooms.
