Bettie McKinney chaired her first Northwood Gala in 1980 and continued a very active association with Northwood serving as Gala Auction Chairman in 1981 and Gala Patron Co-chairman in 1982 and 1984. She also served as chairman of the Dallas chapter of Northwood’s National Women’s Board in 1983-1984. Her leadership in numerous other organizations included the Plaza Theatre, the Dallas Council of World Affairs and Les Femmes du Monde. She was also active in the Dallas Ballet, Dallas Opera, Dallas Summer Musicals and the Dallas Symphony. A forth generation Dallasite, Mrs. McKinney was educated in the Dallas public school system and at Southern Methodist University. Apparel from her private collection is a part of the Northwood University International Costume Collection. She once said, “I have always been attracted by Northwood’s free enterprise philosophy and to the leaders throughout the Northwood system who are willing to give their time, talent and hard work to promote the school. These people are very interested in the protection of our next generation. I consider it an honor and a challenge, made pleasurable, to be a part of this hardworking group and the beautiful spirit of friendship that we share with each other.” (Deceased 1994)
