Dr. Clara VanderKloot

A graduate of Miss Newman’s School in Detroit, Clara Knudsen VanderKloot also studied at Mont Choisi in Lausanne, Switzerland. Her husband, Robert, served for three years as chairman of the Northwood Board of Trustees. They have three children and seven grandchildren. Mrs. VanderKloot has been a member of the Detroit chapter of the Northwood National Women’s Board, which she helped organize and develop. She served as National Chair of the National Women’s Board, which she helped to found, from 1969-1973. Mrs. VanderKloot has been a member of the Junior League of Oakland County, National Sponsor of Save the Children Federation, a member of the Danish Women’s Volunteer Service, Altrusa Society, member of the Advisory Board to the Board of Trustees of St. Mary’s Hospital and a board member of Children’s Hospital of Michigan. She received the Detroit Women’s Advertising Heart Award, Save the Children Humanitarian Fellowship Award, was made Honorary Member of Altrusa Club of Michigan and received awards from Bloomfield Hills Academy and from the Nursing School of St. Mary’s Hospital. She was decorated with the medal and diploma of the Order of Merit from the International Union of Child Welfare, Geneva, Switzerland in 1972 and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree by Northwood. In 1983, she was given an Honorary Recognition Award by the Michigan chapter of the National Home Fashions League, Inc. The VanderKloots also received a lifetime of service award from Northwood in the 1990s. She and her husband were founders of Bloomfield Hills Academy, a school for girls, once affiliated with Northwood University. (Deceased 2001)
