Marie Shackelton

Marie Shackleton was born in Olivet, Michigan where her father was a professor at Olivet College. He was later named Ambassador to the Court of Siam, 1898-1912. She was graduated from Olivet College with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees and attended private schools in Germany and Switzerland. Mrs. Shackleton attended Bryn Mawr graduate school and Columbia University. She later taught at Des Moines College and Grinnell College in Iowa and in Michigan at Kalamazoo College. Her husband, James E. Shackleton, served as senior vice president of the Michigan National Bank from 1934 to 1961 and as president of the Central National Bank of Alma from 1961-1967. Mrs. Shackleton was a member of the Northwood National Women’s Board, the Women’s Board of Saginaw County Hospital, a member of the board and treasurer of the Visiting Nurses Association, a member of the board of the YWCA, a group leader of the King’s Daughters, a member of the Soronian Society and a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of Olivet College. She also belonged to the Saginaw Club, Saginaw Country Club and Germania of Saginaw. About Northwood she said, “The practical plan of instruction appealed to me, as did the splendid manner in which the officials started and carried on its development, preparing students for life in the literary and practical sides.” (Deceased 1982)
