Dr. Winifred Hirsch

Winifred Hirsch was born in Arkansas and lived for several years in New York and Washington, DC She was assistant editor of a children’s magazine, and later became a corporation liaison representative with foreign governments. Mrs. Maurice Hirsch served on the governing board of the Houston Grand Opera and was the honorary chairman of the trustees of the Houston Grand Opera Endowment, Inc. She served on the executive committee of the Houston Symphony Society, was appointed a lifetime member of the board of directors of the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and was an honorary member of the board of the Salesmanship Club Camp for Children. She was a member of the Garden Club of America, the Blue Bird Circle, the Harris County Heritage Society, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Florence Crittenden Home for Unwed Mothers and Chi Omega sorority. She and her husband, General Maurice Hirsch, were influential in introducing Northwood in the Houston area and supported the college in Dallas, in Michigan and worldwide. They were among Northwood’s first friends and great supporters of the founders. She said, “The development of Northwood in Texas and the Great Southwest has brought a much-needed program to our area. The enthusiasm of my friends in Texas is evidence of the outstanding nature of the institution.” (Deceased 1990)
