Mary Wells Lawrence, founder and principal of Wells, Rich, Green advertising in New York City, is one of America’s most successful and creative businesswomen. She attended Carnegie Institute of Technology and studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse, New York City. Her career began with McKelvey’s Department Store, Youngstown, Ohio and she later worked with Macy’s in New York. She was associated with several well-known advertising agencies, including McCann-Erickson, Doyle Dane Bernbach and Jack Tinker and Partners before founding her own firm. She was named to the Copywriter’s Hall of Fame in 1969 and in 1970 received the Marketing Stateswoman of the Year award from the Sales Executive Club of New York. She was named one of the Ten Most Successful Women in American Business and received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Babson College, Wellesley, Massachusetts. Mrs. Lawrence was named Advertising Woman of the Year by the American Advertising Federation in 1971. Mrs. Lawrence also has served on the board of directors of the May Company Department Stores and on the board of the American Film Institute. Mary Wells Lawrence is the wife of Harding L. Lawrence, former chairman of the board of Braniff International Airlines. They have five children.
