Vera A. Griswold

January 1, 1972

1972 – Midland, Michigan

Mrs. Thomas Griswold, Jr. shared a full life with her late husband, their family of six children, her church and her community in a balance that brought both happiness and achievement. Thomas Griswold, Jr. was the second man Herbert Dow hired in the formation of The Dow Chemical Company and his manifold contributions to the success of this chemical giant are a matter of admirable record. Vera went from schooling right into the business world where she was impressed with the values of the free enterprise system. She was employed at The Dow Chemical Company where she met Tom Griswold. Through the years, Vera and Tom committed themselves to the American system of values. Her association with Northwood included membership on the Executive Committee of the Town & Campus chapter of the National Women’s Board. Other interests included: Girl Scouts, the Family Service Agency, the Twentieth Century Club and the Midland Symphony (honorary board member). She was also a devoted supporter of the King’s Daughters. Her concern for education in her community found its consummation in the Griswold Communications Center on the Midland campus of Northwood which she built in memory of her husband. With Alden B. Dow as architect, this unique structural concept heralded a whole new era of communication in business training. Mrs. Griswold’s daughter, Cathy, with her husband, the Reverend William Tate Elliott, continue Vera’s legacy of support and involvement with the college. (Deceased 1982)
