Phoebe Barstow

For more than twenty-five years Mrs. Ormond Barstow was a member of the Midland Symphony Orchestra and won an enviable reputation as a talented cellist. She was also a member of the Mid-Michigan String Quartet. In Midland, she was a member of the Twentieth Century Club, Community Concert Society Board, Community Center Trustees Board, Community Center Operating Board, Memorial Presbyterian Church and the Midland Symphony Orchestra Board. Northwood was the beneficiary of a great deal of her time and talent. Mrs. Barstow was vice-chairman of Northwood’s Michigan Women’s Board, a member of the first Talent and Celebrity Series and Women’s Courses Committees, chairman of the Music Appreciation Committee and was involved with such activities as FAD, the Book Buffet and artist programs. She was chairman of the 1977 National Women’s Board meetings in Palm Beach. Phoebe Barstow was a graduate of Lawrence College, Appleton, Wisconsin where she was president of her sorority, Alpha Delta Pi. After completing college, she taught high school English, music and dramatics. She and her husband, Ormond Barstow, a Dow Chemical Company executive, were great benefactors to the Midland community.
