Helen Wallbank Milliken

Helen Milliken was born in Denver, Colorado. She is a graduate of Smith College and holds honorary degrees from the University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Eastern Michigan University, Central Michigan University and Lake Michigan College. She is married to William G. Milliken, Governor of the State of Michigan from 1969 through 1982. Governor and Mrs. Milliken are the parents of two children. Since 1978, she has served as co-chair of ERAmerica and has traveled extensively to unratified states campaigning for ERA. Mrs. Milliken sits on the board of the Women’s Research and Education Institue of the Congresswomen’s Caucus and is a member of the League of Women Voters, Federation for American Immigration Reform, Zero Popluation Growth and the Federated Garden Clubs of Michigan. She was convener of the International Women’s Year delegation in Michigan and was a Michigan delegate to the 1977 IWY Conference in Houston, Texas. In 1975 she toured the People’s Republic of China with a delegation from American Women for International Understanding. She has served as honorary chair of the Michigan Artrain, a traveling art museum, and has been an honorary member of the Michigan Society of Architects, Michigan Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, YWCA World Service Council and Zonta. In 1994 Concerned Citizens for the Arts in Michigan presented the Millikens with the coveted (MI) Governor’s Arts Award. She has been a member of the Northwood National Women’s Board since its founding.
