January 1, 1979

1979 – Dallas, Texas

Dorothy Brown Herkimer was born in Dallas, Texas and was a life-long resident of that city. She was the wife of Lawrence Russell Herkimer and the mother of three daughters. Mrs. Herkimer was a graduate of WoodrowWilson High School in Dallas and received her BS cum laude and her MS in education from Southern Methodist University. She worked as a teacher in the Dallas school system and was involved with education through her work with many related groups. She served as president of Cheerleader Supply Company, Inc. and was treasurer of Rusé Rouge, Inc. and Dallas Knitting Company, Inc. Her volunteer work included the Dallas chapter of Northwood’s National Women’s Board, which she chaired, Callas Civic Opera, Dallas Museum of Fine Arts Associates, Dallas Symphony Orchestra League, Dallas Council of World Affairs, Les Femmes du Monde and the Salesmanship Club — Byron Nelson Golf Classic. Upon her award, she said, “I believe very strongly in the free enterprise system, and I feel it can best be taught at the college level where students can see a working career in the immediate future. It is important that our college graduates understand the merits of profits rather than concentrate on the evils.” Both Lawrence (Herkie) and Dottie Herkimer were enthusiastically involved with the growth of Northwood and active in its programs and support.
