Meet the Camp Leaders

A man in a beige dress shirt with gray vertical stripes and a black tie, smiling in front of a dark textured background.

Marc Beaty is the Chair of Computer Science at Northwood University and brings more than 25 years of industry experience to the classroom. Before entering higher education, he worked with organizations including AT&T, MCI, Qwest Communications, and the U.S. Air Force, where he gained experience in software development, data analytics, systems security, machine learning, telecommunications, satellite communications, and wireless technologies. His passion is helping students understand not only how technology works, but also how it is used to solve real-world problems and create innovative solutions.

Professor Beaty is excited to work with this year’s Technology Camp participants and introduce them to coding, artificial intelligence, game development, and other emerging technologies through hands-on activities. He hopes campers leave with new skills, greater confidence, and excitement for exploring future opportunities in technology.

A man in a dark suit and patterned tie smiles at the camera against a plain brown background.

Brian is the Department Chair of Data Analytics at Northwood University, where he leads the development of practical and engaging learning experiences in analytics, statistics, and machine learning. He brings a blend of industry experience and academic leadership that helps students understand how technology connects to real world problem solving. Brian is known for clear instruction, patience, and a supportive teaching style that helps students feel confident as they explore new ideas. He enjoys creating environments where students can experiment, ask questions, and discover their strengths in a positive and encouraging setting.

David Sanford serves as the Division Chair of Computing and Information Sciences, Department Chair of Cybersecurity, and Department Chair of Management Information Systems at Northwood University. Having been part of the Northwood community since 2000, David has spent more than two decades helping students grow into confident, capable technology professionals. With a background that includes hands‑on consulting and management systems implementation, David brings real‑world insight into every course he teaches. He enjoys showing students how technology comes alive in practical settings, how systems are built, how organizations rely on them, and how thoughtful design can make work easier and more secure. David is known for his warm teaching style, patience, and ability to make complex ideas feel approachable. He creates classrooms where students feel comfortable asking questions, exploring new concepts, and discovering what they’re capable of. His goal is always the same: to help students build confidence, find their strengths, and step into the tech world with curiosity and a sense of possibility.

Beyond the Classroom

It’s not all coding! Campers will experience the best of Midland and the Northwood campus with:

  • A night out at a Great Lakes Loons Baseball Game at Dow Diamond.
  • An outdoor canopy walk and exploration at Dow Gardens and Whiting Forest.
  • A campus-wide scavenger hunt, BBQ night, yard games, and kickball on the Northwood Softball Diamond.
  • Daily “Minute-to-Win-It” mini-challenges to spark creativity.
