Community leaders recognized for philanthropy, service and commitment to improving lives throughout Midland County.

Northwood University honored longtime community leaders and philanthropists David and Patricia Kepler with the Robert E. and Patricia L. Naegele Distinguished Community Service Award in recognition of the Keplers’ extraordinary commitment to improving lives, advancing Michigan’s Great Lakes Bay Region and supporting Northwood students.

The Naegele Award recognizes individuals whose service has made a lasting difference at the university and throughout the broader Midland community.

“Dave and Patti Kepler represent the very best of leadership in action,” said Northwood University President Kent MacDonald. “Their success has never been measured solely by what they have achieved, but by how generously they have used their time, talents, and resources to improve the lives of others. Through their commitment to Northwood students and organizations across the Great Lakes Bay Region, they have created opportunities, strengthened communities, and inspired others to serve. Their lives reflect the principles we hope every Northwood graduate will carry forward. It is a privilege to recognize them with the Naegele Distinguished Community Service Award.”

Steadfast supporters of Northwood University, the Keplers have helped fund student scholarships through their sponsorship of the Northwood University International Auto Show Gala and the Outstanding Business Leaders Awards Gala. The couple also generously supports Northwood Athletics, as well as events like the annual Stafford Dinner and Tavern 59, which benefit students and the broader community. Most recently, the Keplers gave Northwood a 10-seat golf cart to support transportation and hospitality needs across campus.

The Keplers’ connection to Northwood also extends to Midland Brewing Company, where they worked with the university to develop Howling Wolf, a Northwood-branded beer enjoyed by alumni and friends of the university.

David Kepler was inducted into Northwood’s Outstanding Business Leaders Class of 2020 and the university’s Gallery of Distinction in 2016. The Outstanding Business Leaders Awards recognize individuals whose business achievements and commitment to free enterprise provide a lasting example for Northwood students. The Gallery of Distinction honors individuals whose accomplishments reflect the values within Northwood University’s institutional philosophy, The Northwood Idea, and whose leadership has made a meaningful contribution to society.

Patricia and David Kepler Foundation Dedicated to Improving Quality of Life for Families

The Keplers founded the Patricia and David Kepler Foundation to improve quality of life for families throughout the region, with a particular focus on Midland County. One of the family’s signature community resources is Lazy Turtle Ranch in Edenville. The property provides nonprofit organizations with a welcoming setting for camps, picnics, retreats and outdoor activities.

Patti Kepler has welcomed numerous organizations serving children, families and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to the ranch, including The Arc of Midland, Independent Community Living, Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Children’s Grief Center of the Great Lakes Bay Region and local Scouting groups.

Her extensive community involvement also included ministry through Blessed Sacrament Parish and volunteer service with organizations throughout the Midland area. In 2021, Patti Kepler was recognized through the Midland Daily NewsHeroes and Hand Raisers program for her willingness to identify community needs and become personally involved in addressing them.

Dave Kepler serves as president and chairperson of the Four Lakes Task Force, a non-profit organization that is leading efforts to restore the lakes affected by the May 19, 2020, mid-Michigan dam failures. He also serves on the Michigan Baseball Foundation board.

Dave Kepler is a former Executive Vice President of The Dow Chemical Co. His 39-year career with Dow included leadership roles such as Chief Information Officer and Chief Sustainability Officer, as well as assignments in the United States, Canada and the Pacific region. He previously served on the National Infrastructure Advisory Council, which advises the president of the United States on the security and resilience of the nation’s critical infrastructure. His additional board and advisory experience has included service with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, American Chemistry Council, National Safety Council, TD Bank Group, Teradata Corp. and Autoliv.

In addition to their philanthropy and volunteerism, the Keplers and their family have further contributed to regional economic development through Turtle Cove Properties, which investments include Midland Brewing Company, Cottage Creamery, and commercial buildings and apartments in Midland.

“Dave and Patti Kepler demonstrate that leadership is about more than professional accomplishment,” said Chief Development and Engagement Officer Justin Marshall. “It is also about using one’s freedom, talents and resources to serve others, expand opportunity and leave a community stronger for future generations. Northwood is grateful for their example and pleased to recognize their extraordinary service.”

The Naegele Award was presented during Northwood’s Aug. 22, 2026, Opening Convocation, a signature academic tradition that sets the tone for the college experience by welcoming new first-year and transfer students, introducing them to Northwood’s core values and uniting them as members of the university community.
