Northwood University has been named the official title sponsor of the newly formed Michigan Modified Series, creating a natural partnership between America’s Automotive University and one of Michigan’s newest short-track racing series.

The series will be known as the Michigan Modified Series Powered by Northwood University. Co-sanctioned by Berlin Raceway and Owosso Speedway, the series was launched in 2026 to provide a premier touring home for modified racing competitors throughout Michigan. Despite being in its inaugural season, the series has already established itself as a success story, drawing strong car counts, competitive racing, and impressive fan engagement during its first two events — one hosted at Berlin Raceway and one at Owosso Speedway.

The partnership strengthens Northwood’s growing presence in motorsports business education while supporting a series designed to elevate modified racing, increase opportunities for competitors, and deliver championship-caliber entertainment for fans.

“To have an institution with the reputation and reach of Northwood University step forward as the title sponsor in our very first season is a tremendous vote of confidence in what we are building,” said Dennis Wheeler of Owosso Speedway. “The response from teams, fans and industry partners has been outstanding, and Northwood’s support helps position the Michigan Modified Series for long-term growth and success.”

For Northwood, the sponsorship reflects the university’s commitment to preparing students for leadership roles across the full automotive and mobility ecosystem, including the fast-growing business side of motorsports.

“Motorsports is much more than what fans see on race day,” said Dr. Dave Oventhal, Subaru of New England professor of automotive strategy at Northwood University. “Behind every successful race team, series, and venue is a business operation involving strategy, sponsorship, marketing, logistics, data, media, hospitality and leadership. This partnership gives Northwood another meaningful way to connect students with the business of racing while supporting an industry that aligns so naturally with our automotive heritage.”

Northwood has long been recognized for its automotive industry connections and distinct experiential learning opportunities, including the Northwood University International Auto Show. Through the Center for Automotive & Mobility Studies, Northwood continues to expand opportunities for students interested in automotive, mobility and motorsports careers.

Created through a collaborative effort between Berlin Raceway and Owosso Speedway, the Michigan Modified Series Powered by Northwood University will continue visiting both tracks throughout its inaugural championship season. The series showcases some of the Midwest’s top modified racing talent while building a stronger platform for racers, fans and industry partners.

“Northwood University is proud to support a series that is strengthening Michigan short-track racing while offering new learning opportunities and experiences for students,” said Oventhal.

“The values of competition, leadership, innovation, and community engagement align closely with what Northwood University represents,” added Andrew Postma of Berlin Raceway. “We are honored to have Northwood University attached to the series name and look forward to building this partnership for years to come.”

For schedules, standings and series updates, fans are encouraged to follow Berlin Raceway and Owosso Speedway on social media.
