Students in the Kappa Sigma fraternity at Northwood University are commemorating the anniversary of Sept. 11 through a stair-climbing fundraiser and campus-wide display of American flags.

“Together, these efforts pay tribute to the 2,977 lives lost during the terrorist attacks of 2001 while honoring the bravery and sacrifice of first responders,” stated Chapter President Michael Shtutman of Marlton, New Jersey.

On Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025, fraternity brothers placed 2,977 American flags throughout campus — one for each victim of the attacks. On Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025, Kappa Sigma brothers will climb 58 flights of stairs at Hantz Stadium, mirroring the heroic efforts of first responders who ascended the same number of floors in the World Trade Center more than two decades ago.

“Our brothers will climb 2,200 steps to honor the brave first responders of 9/11,” Shtutman noted.

The stair climb is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 11, 2025.

“This is the sixth consecutive year our fraternity has commemorated the anniversary of 9/11,” explained Brother Chase Southwick of Livonia, Michigan. “This ongoing tradition within our brotherhood grows every year. It reminds us to always respect and honor our first responders and never forget what happened on that day.”

In addition to the stair climb, the fraternity is also raising funds for Kappa Sigma’s official philanthropy, Military Heroes, which provides ongoing support for veterans and their families.
