Northwood University Hosts Michigan American Legion Boys State Program with Midland Native Elected Governor

Church Family Administration Building on the Michigan campus
MIDLAND, MI – Northwood University is hosting the annual Boys State program throughout the week of Sunday, June 16, to Saturday, June 22, sponsored by the American Legion-Department of Michigan. Similar programs are sponsored by the American Legion Departments across the nation. The elections held for Boys State earlier in the week resulted with Midland native Gabe Klotz, a senior from Midland High School, being elected governor.

Boys State is an educational program that teaches young men who have concluded their junior year of high school the role and function of government. It is a program that has been in existence in Michigan for 76 years with 274 young men from across the state of Michigan attending this year. Boys State is not a boot camp, a sports camp or a summer vacation—it is a national civics leadership program. Boys State prepares young men for excellence in all tracks of life.

Those who attend become citizens of a fictional 51st state and learn to govern themselves. The two political parties are nationalists and federalists. While they partake in the program, the participants also experience college dorm life as well as effective peer communication, leadership and management. Attributes to be considered for potential attendees are leadership, character, scholarship, loyalty and service to schools and community.

The closing ceremony will be held Saturday, June 22, at 8:45 a.m. in the Bennett Sports Center on Northwood’s campus located at 4000 Whiting Drive. The governor of Boys State will give his closing remarks for the week. Two participants from each Boys State program from across the country are then chosen to attend Boys Nation held this year July 19-27 in Washington D.C. Similar to Boys State, the Boys Nation program gives attendees an insight into national government and legislature.

Dr. William Bateman, Northwood University Michigan campus president, states, “Northwood University is proud to host such an excellent program. The University supports the American Legion’s effort to educate young men about government and leadership.”
