Welcome
As the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is upon us, it is important not to forget the significance of all that was celebrated just last week. The Thanksgiving holiday enables each of us to reflect on the events that have transpired in each of our lives, and regardless of all that has occurred (positive or negative) we can take a moment and give thanks to the precious gifts we enjoy: - Beloved family members, great friends and colleagues, and above all, the liberties and freedoms we enjoy in the United States of America!
In the theme of the holiday season, DeVos has much to be thankful for. We are truly thankful for a tremendous beginning to the 2007-2008 academic year, which has brought record enrollment to our part-time MBA programs in Midland, Lansing, and Troy. We are also pleased to share with you the beginning of our inaugural cohort group in our DeVos-Switzerland MBA Program offered abroad in Montreux, Switzerland. The last quarter has brought about great change and excitement, and we are encouraged about the opportunities to flourish as 2008 draws near. We look forward to engaging you in these exciting times at Northwood University.
Most importantly, we are thankful for you, our alumni and friends. Without your dedication and tireless support, we certainly would not have been able to accomplish the feats we have to date. Your passion, volunteerism in your respective communities, and continued success in the workplace, continue to demonstrate your leadership capabilities and reflect positively for your alma mater. We thank you again for your commitment to Northwood University and The Richard DeVos Graduate School of Management, and wish you and yours a happy holiday and prosperous 2008!

A Great Start to the 2007-2008 Academic Year!
This fall brought with it terrific growth to the DeVos Graduate School of Management. We are pleased to inform you that fall enrollment has increased a remarkable 17% for the 2007-2008 academic year as compared to 2006-2007, and our quality of admitted students has continued to remain top-notch!
Our most significant growth was realized in our Evening MBA programs at our Midland and Lansing locations respectively. In addition, we have experienced further growth with the introduction of our DeVos-Switzerland MBA program offered abroad in Montreux, Switzerland.
DeVos currently offers the Evening MBA program in Lansing, Midland, and Troy, MI; the Full-time MBA program in Midland, Michigan; the Switzerland MBA program in Montreux, Switzerland; and the DeVos/Dow/Hantz Partnership MBA program globally.
With over 75 recent graduates, there are now more than 900 DeVos alumni worldwide. Our enrollment successes certainly could not have been achieved without the referrals and encouragement offered by you, our Devos alumni. Your loyalty and commitment are truly appreciated and we look forward to your continued involvement. Thank you again for all of your assistance!
Back to TopDeVos Launches Innovative Evening MBA Curriculum!
As the DeVos Graduate School of Management continues its effort to provide innovative and relevant management and leadership curriculums in the Master of Business Administration discipline, it is a privilege to announce that through industry research, student feedback, and thorough curriculum review, DeVos has redesigned its part-time MBA program of study and launched the DeVos Evening MBA Program this fall!
The MBA program redesign process was a comprehensive and collaborative effort amongst faculty, staff, and alumni. The redesign allows DeVos to better meet the current demands of working professionals with significant management experience desirous of the MBA degree. The result, a dynamic module-based curriculum focused on integrative management and leadership at all levels of the firm as well as the core DeVos outcomes of Business Acumen, Critical Thinking, and Personal Effectiveness.
This modern approach to graduate education seeks to further provide understanding, application, and the relationships that exist amongst key leadership content elements. Expanding upon the key attributes of our Executive and Managerial MBA Programs respectively, the new Evening MBA Program broadens the learning spectrum and adds depth to encompass elements involving: Satisfying Shareholders, Satisfying Customers, The External Environment, Measurement, Thinking Reasoning & Analysis, Leadership, and Integration/Implementation. This module-based approach further synthesizes the skills vital and necessary for emerging leaders and enables a well-rounded training and development process that students can readily apply to their respective careers. In short, students are immersed and exposed to all facets of leadership as opposed to traditional methods of segmentation. This DeVos Learning Process is illustrated in the following:
The new DeVos Evening MBA has been received well in the marketplace as evidence by record enrollment across all of our part-time MBA program locations. Student feedback has been very favorable, and we are working diligently toward recruiting our fall 2008 cohort group!
This is an exciting time at DeVos, and we look forward to continuing to work with you to provide current and relevant curriculums that prepare our MBA candidates with cutting-edge leadership skills. For further information on the new DeVos Evening MBA program, feel free to review the information online at our website.

Back to TopHoliday Networking Reception
Northwood University and the DeVos Graduate School of Management hosted a special "Holiday Networking Event" at the Dow Diamond in Midland, Michigan, on November 15. The event offered an exciting beginning to the holiday season and provided a venue where our alumni, current MBA students, prospective students, and faculty were able to gather for an evening of networking, socializing, and holiday festivities.
Northwood University's President Keith A. Pretty was in attendance and said a few words during the event, along with DeVos alumni and President of the Michigan Association of United Way, Scott Dzurka.
The event was tremendously successful and we plan on hosting several networking events for those that were unable to attend. A networking event is currently scheduled for our Lansing area alumni on January 17th. Further details will be available soon.
If you would like to make a recommendation as to the setting of future alumni events, please contact Brandi Cramer at 989.837.4425 or via email at devosalumni@northwood.edu.
Back to TopAfghan Women's Project
This fall, Northwood University, in its continued support of free markets, enterprise, and entrepreneurship, collaborated with the WIPP Institute (Women Impacting Public Policy) to initiate the "Peace Through Business" Project. This project, collectively supported and organized by Northwood University and the WIPP Institute, a non-profit organization helping women gain entrepreneurial skills, afforded nine Afghan women the opportunity to travel to Midland, MI, for business training and mentoring at NU. The nine women received five weeks of intensive courses and workshops at Northwood University on our Midland, Michigan campus.
While here, the trainees developed personal business plans to take back with them to Afghanistan. The women were also individually matched with an American woman business owner in various U.S. locales for a week of practical mentoring. The group then traveled to Washington, D.C., for a meeting with First Lady Laura Bush, as well as visits to the Departments of State, Commerce, Labor, OPIC and the Embassy of Afghanistan.
Upon their return home, the women will work with other Afghan women business owners through established women's centers already up and running. They are determined to take their new knowledge and experience and "pay it forward". With this project, to be repeated next year, the WIPP Institute and Northwood University seek to provide aspiring Afghan women business owners with the basic tools and education they need to achieve their entrepreneurial goals. Projects such as this align very well with the mission of Northwood University to: "Develop the Future Leaders of a Global, Free-Enterprise Society!"
Back to TopQuarterly Link to Harvard
We are pleased to provide you this edition's Quarterly Link to Harvard. This feature has continued to produce positive feedback from our alumni and friends and we hope you continue to find the information of value.
In past editions, we have provided links associated with business strategy and key management practices and techniques. In our effort to continue to maintain a well-rounded leadership approach, we were compelled to provide a quarterly link centered specifically on the development of your leadership style and skills. To that end, we present this quarter's Link to Harvard entitled, "Discovering Your Authentic Leadership." This article provides insightful thought on how you can effectively utilize all of the experiences (good and bad) that make up your "life story" to motivate and influence throughout your organization.
We hope you enjoy this installment of the newsletter and encourage your feedback and suggestions on future management and leadership topics for consideration in future DeVos Quarterly E-Newsletters!

Primal Leadership, by Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis, Annie McKee is the second installment by emotional intelligence pioneer Daniel Goleman, and provides further insight and understanding of the key attitudinal and emotional elements vital to maximize leadership quality and organizational effectiveness. Along with Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee, Goleman further builds on the emotional intelligence subject introduced in his New York Times Best Seller, Emotional Intelligence.
Primal Leadership illustrates the impact emotional intelligence has on leaders, their organizations, and how it can and must be harnessed to achieve synergistic or resonant leadership. Resonance, as the book defines, is a reservoir of positivity that frees the best in people, and at its root, the primal job of leadership is emotional. Primal Leadership aims not only to identify how resonant leadership can be achieved, but also provides self-directed, instructional steps on how it can effectively develop, grow and sustain within the complex framework of an organizational culture.
We hope you enjoy this recommendation, and look forward to your feedback! We also encourage you to provide personal recommendations you feel could benefit fellow alumni and friends.
