October 2008

 Welcome

Welcome to the October edition of the Northwood University alumni e-newsletter.

We are just over one week away from the 45th Annual Northwood University International Auto Show.  Our students, faculty, and staff always look forward to seeing all of our alumni during Auto Show/homecoming weekend.  Don’t forget to visit the alumni booth on the mall walk during the show and attend the “Wolf Howl” alumni reception at 3:00 pm on Saturday, October 11 in the Hach Center.

To compliment the fall 2008 Omniquest book “The Last Lecture,” Northwood University is excited to host Co-author, Jeffrey Zaslow.  Zaslow is a columnist for The Wall Street Journal, attended the last lecture, and wrote the story that helped fuel worldwide interest.  He will give a one hour lecture on the national bestseller with Q&A to follow.  Join us in the Hach Student Life Center on October 16, 2008; the lecture begins promptly at 7:00 pm.  All are invited to attend; click on the banner below for additional information.

Valley-Wood Challenge Cup lands a trophy for the Timberwolves.

On Friday, September 19, Northwood hosted the first annual Valley-Wood Challenge Cup golf tournament between Northwood and neighborhood rival Saginaw Valley State University.  Each school fielded four-person teams who competed in a Ryder Cup style format with head-to-head competition on each hole.  One point was earned by each team that won its 18-hole match; one half-point was awarded for 18-hole ties.  Net proceeds from the event will be distributed to the schools’ respective athletic programs. The blue-clad Timberwolves drubbed the red-clad Cardinals by a score of 8-0!

The traveling trophy was presented by host President Keith Pretty, to the Timberwolves Athletic Director, Pat Riepma.  The presentation took place at half-time of the Northwood – SVSU football game the next day.

Northwood will defend its title next September at SVSU.

 NORTHWOOD UNIVERSITY – 50th ANNIVERSARY

September 3, 2008 marked the first day of classes for the 50th incoming class of Northwood University.  And while the official celebration and events are scheduled to begin in March of 2009, the new academic year presented an ideal opportunity to kick off the year ‘50s style.  On Thursday, September 18, Northwood University students, staff, faculty, and community members were invited to an ‘off the block, block party’ in downtown Midland.  The festivities began with the 2nd annual Wolf Walk which led those who participated to the Farmers’ Market where food, games, and entertainment were awaiting.  As the band, Three Penny Revue played ‘50s themed music; the guests were able to enjoy a BBQ dinner and a variety of give-a-ways while interacting with one another.

Dean Larry Lindsey welcomed the guests and turned the floor over to President Keith Pretty who announced the beginning of the 50th Anniversary celebrations with a balloon launch (picture below).  While the event was a success, it was only the beginning.  We have a full year, March 2009 to March 2010, prepared to honor Northwood’s 50th birthday.
