September 2008

 Welcome

Welcome to the September edition of the Northwood University alumni e-newsletter.

This month we are thrilled to announce the new and improved Northwood University website www.northwood.edu.  This new site focuses on information that a prospective student may need.  The web team also completely revamped the alumni and athletics websites.  Along with the new websites, the alumni office is now taking advantage of two online networking sites.  We encourage ALL alumni to register on www.linkedin.com and join “The Official Northwood University Alumni Group.”  LinkedIn is an extremely popular professional networking site that is dedicated to creating a business networking community.  Make sure to join the Northwood group on LinkedIn and get connected with Northwood alumni from all over the world.  Various alumni chapters have also begun to use www.facebook.com to connect people who are interested in being involved with a local chapter.  Currently SE Michigan, Chicago, Cleveland, Florida, and Malaysia have Facebook alumni chapter groups; we encourage you to join if you are located in any of these areas.

With just five weeks left before Auto Show/Homecoming weekend, students and staff are buzzing with excitement.  The annual alumni brochure and football schedule magnet were mailed on September 2.  Please let us know if you do not receive one and we will mail one to you promptly.  All Auto Show events are listed online at www.northwood.edu/autoshow.

Northwood University Announces Chair and Vice Chair of 45th Annual Auto Show

MIDLAND, Mich. - Joseph Lescota, chair of the Automotive Marketing department at Northwood University, has announced the selection of Nicole Paparella for general chair of the 2008 Northwood University International Auto Show (NUIAS) and Blake Wilcox for vice chair.  Northwood University students will host the 45th annual NUIAS on October 10, 11 and 12.  The Auto Show is held on the Michigan campus of Northwood University located at 4000 Whiting Drive in Midland.  This year's theme is "Fueling the Future."

Nicole is the daughter of John and Kathy Paparella of Mt. Pleasant and Mary Paparella of Grand Haven.  Nicole is in her fourth year at Northwood University pursuing a triple major in Automotive Marketing, Advertising, and Business Management.  During her time at Northwood, Nicole has completed three internships with the Detroit Automobile Dealers Association assisting with the 2006, 2007, and 2008 North American International Auto Shows in Detroit and looks forward to returning this year.  She has also completed two summer internships with Ford Motor Company.  Nicole worked as a member of Team Porsche for the 2005 Auto Show, as captain of Team Honda in 2006, and was vice chair for the 2007 Northwood University International Auto Show.

Nicole states, "Auto Show for me is more than a project.  It's more than an extracurricular activity.  It becomes your life.  The 15-student executive board spends so much time together that you truly become family."  After graduation she hopes to pursue a career in the advertising and marketing departments of an automotive manufacturer.

Blake Wilcox, a junior at Northwood University and the son of Steve and Pam Wilcox of Mattawan, achieved the position of vice chair though an interview process.  The vice chair of the Auto Show is selected each year by the general chair.  According to Nicole, "After interviewing applicants, one stood out above the rest.  Blake surpassed the other candidates on many levels.  He is self-motivated, hard-working and goal-oriented.  The decision at that point was easy and Blake stepped up to the responsibility perfectly."

Blake is studying Automotive Marketing, Banking & Finance, and Management.  He has been involved with the Auto Show every year he has attended Northwood University and won Best Heavy Truck Walk-Around for last year's show.

Nicole says that planning and organizing the Northwood Auto Show is an 11-month responsibility but it offers so much real-world experience and so many fun times that it doesn't seem like work.  She continues, "As students we facilitate every part of the three-day event which draws over 55,000 people to our college campus.  It's truly an incredible experience."
