April 2008
Welcome
Welcome to the April edition of the Northwood University alumni e-newsletter. Springtime is always one of the most exciting times of the year as we get ready to graduate the senior class and honor the year’s Outstanding Alumni Achievement Awardees.
This past weekend we honored five alumni with the 2008 Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award. All recipients were chosen for this award because of their personal and professional accomplishments as well as their support for Northwood University and “The Northwood Idea.”

Alternative Spring Break
As an alternative to other spring break activities, Northwood University sent a group of students to Phenix City, Ala., for a Habitat for Humanity project. The eight Northwood students along with a Northwood staff member and a professor were gone the week of March 2 as part of Habitat’s Collegiate Challenge program. The students began meeting in the fall to prepare for their trip. They learned about Habitat for Humanity and the area they would be visiting, along with having time to become familiar with each other.
During their time in Alabama, the group worked on erecting the framework for two houses. They worked alongside area volunteers, including licensed builders, and future habitat homeowners. Community members provided meals while they were there and they were able to see neighboring Columbus, Georgia during their day off.
Each night students led a group activity to reflect on their day’s experiences and to build lasting relationships. Each of the students paid for a portion of the trip while Northwood University covered the majority of their expenses and trip fees.
The trip participants included: AJ Quakenbush, Sarah McLean, Heidi Seagraves, Chanda Brice, Paul Rowley, Jr., Courtney Meyer, Dana Perkins, and Katia King. Also attending were Mariana Grigoras, Northwood University professor, and Kylee Vanek, MCC Americorps VISTA for Northwood University.

Omniquest 2008
Omniquest is a university-wide program, overlaying all other programs, in which a provocative and challenging book is selected each term. The theme of the book is adopted for discussion and analysis during that term on all campuses and within all programs, simultaneously. Here are the three books that were chosen for the 2007-08 Omniquest program; we recommend reading them if you haven’t already.
Fall 2007
Where Have All The Leaders Gone? by Lee Iacocca
Winter 2007

New Ideas from Dead CEO's by Todd Buchholz
“The first and most important thing to get across to the students is they need to be more diverse in their reading than just textbooks. We want them to have a broader exposure.”
