Bookstore
Northwood University’s campus bookstore is wearing your colors. Paula Bartos, store manager, and her staff, have worked hard to incorporate the bookstore as an integrated piece of Northwood’s brand. Alumni may remember the tiny bookstore from years past. Well, things have certainly changed!
In 2004, the Northwood University bookstore moved from its previous cramped “closet-size” location to a newly designed, spacious, 5,000+ square location in the former shuffleboard/games/dance area of the Gerstacker Student Union. The bookstore design includes a central customer service location with three registers, as well as new carpeting, tile, and textbook and clothing fixtures which complement the stores bright, open, airy, and unique wood beam ceiling structure. The NU Bookstore is now so much more than books and proudly offers a large selection of Insignia clothing, gifts, dorm and office supplies, health and beauty aids, electronics and software, movies and magazines, snacks and drinks, various student services and a wide assortment of trade books including the latest titles in business and economics.
Since the 2004 remodel, the NU Bookstore has undergone many other changes and improvements. In 2005, the company responsible for operating the Bookstore, College Bookstores of America, was purchased by the Nebraska Book Company, one of the nation’s leading college bookstore corporations with over 90 years of bookstore retail experience. The NU Bookstore is now a part of a division of Nebraska known as Validis Resources. The focus of Validis is to provide sound management, leading technology, and quality customer service for each individual campus community.
The bookstore’s website allows students, alumni, and the community at large to conveniently and easily purchase a wide array of clothing, gifts, and even required textbooks with just a few clicks of a mouse. The bookstore is proud to be on campus and looks forward to serving you either in the store or online. Please visit us online at www.cbamatthews.com/northmi/. Your Pack Pride attire for alumni, students, and parents is waiting!
What's new in Athletics
The Northwood University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the members of the second class of the Athletic Hall of Fame.
Marek Kolar (Men’s Tennis), Jim Knapp (Track and Field/Football Coach), Tom Rathburn (Men’s Basketball), LeDesa Schultz (Volleyball) and Nicole Williams (Softball) are the members of this year’s class. They join the inaugural class of Jack Finn (Football Coach/Athletic Director), Kevin Jones (Track and Field), Pavla Melicharova (Volleyball), Jerry Pettway (Men’s Basketball) and R. Gary Stauffer (Northwood Founder) as current members of the Hall of Fame.
The second annual Hall of Fame ceremony will take place September 29, and will be a part of Homecoming and Auto Show weekend. The reception for the event will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m.
Admission to the reception and dinner will be $30.00. Net proceeds from the event will fund a Northwood Athletic Hall of Fame scholarship in the name of the inductees. People interested in attending the event should visit http://www.northwood.edu and go to the Hall of Fame page on the Michigan Athletics site.
The second class of inductees consists of four former athletes and a coach. They were selected based on their athletic prowess, contributions to the athletic programs, success and character as well as their positive representation of Northwood University.
“We are excited to be able to honor these outstanding individuals and to pay tribute to the long history of Northwood Athletics, said Dave Marsh, Associate Athletics Director. “Each of the inductees was a pioneer in their sport and in the development of our athletic program. Without them we would not be enjoying our current success.”
Questions about the event should be directed to Dave Marsh, Associate Athletic Director – (989) 837-4389 or dmarsh@northwood.edu. For additional information on the Athletic Hall of Fame click here: 2007 Athletic Hall of Fame

Northwood Idea in Action!
Northwood University is proud to be involved in a unique and exciting program that embodies the Northwood Idea. On the evening of August 9th, a group of women from Afghanistan arrived on the Midland campus for a 5 week program intended to provide each of them with the knowledge and skills to start and successfully operate their own businesses in their homeland. Dr. John Amin, with the help of Dr. Tim Nash, Dr. Nancy Barker, Paula Ulmer and others, will deliver the program. During one week of the program, the women will be off campus shadowing women business leaders who will be serving as mentors in their respective businesses.
This entire event came to life through the efforts of Terry Neese, the President and CEO of the Women Impacting Public Policy Institute (WIPP) in Oklahoma City. WIPP is an organization created to provide support and encouragement for women in business leadership positions and those aspiring to get there. Terry contacted Northwood because of our mission to develop global business leaders and our commitment to free enterprise and entrepreneurship, which she learned about Northwood in the process of receiving an Outstanding Business Leader Award from us in 2006.
In the planning of this ambitious educational exchange, the U.S. State Department expressed concern for the safety of the women upon their return to their homes in September. When questioned about this, the women acknowledged the risk but decided to go on with the project because of their commitment to bring freedom home from America as a critical step to solidifying their nation’s chances of becoming a truly free society. Several of the women said they knew there could reprisals from the Taliban and others when they return from this learning adventure, but they are passionate about changing the circumstances which have led to the oppression of women in Afghanistan for decades. The program is being funded by private contributions from all over the country. WIPP has raised the funds necessary to cover travel and related expenses and the Northwood community has donated approximately $70,000 to cover the costs of food, housing, and transportation while the women are in Michigan. This is truly another moment for all of the Northwood family to feel great pride in being a part of this great University!Student Life-Orientation
The 1st Annual Northwood WolfWalk will take place on Tuesday, September 4, 2007. The event begins at 3 pm on Northwood University’s campus at 4000 Whiting Drive where all incoming freshmen and upperclassmen will gather to walk the Rail Trail, cross the Tridge, and then up Ashman Street to Main Street, ending at the Dow Diamond where an ice cream social will take place.
Area citizens are invited to greet the students as they come off the Tridge, welcoming their return to Midland for the upcoming academic year.
The WolfWalk is sponsored, in part, by Chemical Bank.
