Welcome
Welcome to the July edition of the Michigan Campus Alumni e-Newsletter.
The fall is approaching... before we know it will be freshman orientation and then Auto Show/Homecoming weekend will be here. Everyone on campus is in full planning mode for both of these traditions...every year we have the desire to make everything bigger and better than the previous year…and this year is no exception. During orientation on August 30th & 31st a few alumni have volunteered to help us greet all of the new students, please let me know if you are interested in helping out too. It might be interesting to go back and relive your time at orientation, and the students will certainly appreciate the warm welcome.
Quick history lesson... I recently took a road trip down to southern Indiana to West Baden Springs and French Lick, Indiana. Some of you might not know that Northwood had a beautiful campus open in West Baden Springs from 1967 until 1983. In fact the campus was in the old West Baden Springs Hotel which was just recently restored to its original beauty and reopened this summer. We have a wonderful group of alumni from that campus that are eager to keep the spirit of the West Baden Indiana campus alive, be on the lookout for a big reunion in that area in the fall of 2008!
Last thing…we are polling to see how many alumni & friends might be interested in riding a charter bus up to campus for the NU vs. GVSU football game October 20, 2007. The bus would leave from Troy office…$25 per person…please email Nicole Gize at gizen@northwood.edu if you are interested.
Look forward to seeing some of you at orientation and all of you during Auto Show/Homecoming weekend!

Support Erica Gough and Team Fabulous!
2004 NU alumna, Erica Gough, was diagnosed in early June of 2007 with Colon Cancer. Shortly after, she found out the cancer had spread to her liver. At that time, she was officially categorized in a T4 stage of cancer... the most severe. At the young age of 26, Erica is now being treated with Chemotherapy to attack the tumors that are in her liver in order for the surgeons to proceed with the surgery to remove the remaining cancer from her liver and colon at Memorial Sloan Kettering, one of the most well recognized cancer treatment centers in the country, located in New York City. So far the treatments have been going as expected, but she is experiencing a lot of the side effects that come along with chemotherapy. Erica’s next update to see if the chemo is actually working will be at the end of August.
Over the past month, Erica’s friends started rallying the troops to create "Team Fabulous"; a group of people that have come together to help support Erica in any and every way possible. Team Fabulous spreads from DC (Erica's current residence) to Michigan, and even overseas. There are a few upcoming events that "Team Fabulous" is holding to help raise funds that will go to Erica's medical fund to help pay for co-pays, chemo, surgeries and living expenses, as Erica can no longer work.
Here is a list of some ways you can become involved:
- 5k run/walk at PJ Hoffmaster Park in Muskegon, MI on Friday, August 10th at 7pm (gates open at 6pm). Email mandyreim@yahoo.com to register.
- A benefit dinner/silent auction to be held during Auto Show at Northwood University on September 29th. Location is TBD. More details to come. Please contact Mandy at mandyreim@yahoo.com to donate items for the silent auction and/or to RSVP.
- A web site for Erica has been created on CaringBridge.org, a free hosting site for cancer patients. PLEASE visit this site to send words of encouragement, post photos and to read Erica's story... written in her own words. It is beautiful. www.caringbridge.org/visit/ericagough
- A line of apparel is being created. Oh, yes... and rest assured it will say "Team Fabulous" on it! The items are still being designed, but I will pass along the link once they are completed and the online store is set up.
- Financial donations are also being accepted. Please email ericafoundation@yahoo.com.
Most importantly...team fabulous is asking for your prayers. No matter how dark it may seem... there is always light. I can say personally, that being on this journey from the beginning, that I've never seen so much courage, strength, determination, optimism... and most importantly faith, as I have in Erica. Erica's light continues to amaze us daily... she is one amazing woman.
Please drop Erica a note on caringbridge.org or on the new Team Fabulous myspace page.
Join Team Fabulous as we "Kick some CA"!!!
