May 2007

Welcome

Welcome to the May edition of the Northwood University Alumni e-Newsletter. I have five topics I would like to mention this month in my welcome.

Graduation
On Saturday, May 19, Northwood University welcomed over 1,000 graduates into the alumni family.  For the first time, Northwood held two spring commencement ceremonies to accommodate all of the graduates and their families.  Also during the ceremonies, two retiring officers, Dr. David D. Long, D.M.D., chancellor and COO, and Dr. Robert W. Serum, Ph.D., vice president, academics and international programs, were presented with honorary doctor of law degrees.  Both are retiring at the end August after a combined 48 years of service to Northwood University.

New Online Service
I am excited to announce that Northwood University now offers an online giving option.  By clicking on the “online giving” icon in the left hand column, you can give securely online with a credit card.  This was an option that was requested by many of you and we are happy to finally offer you this enhancement.

Golf
We still have a few spots available for the 16th Annual Tri-City Golf Tournament scheduled for June 6 at the Bay City Country Club.  This tournament is an event that we all look forward to every year.  With a putting contest, driving range contest, lowest team score, and many other challenges, everyone is sure to go home with a prize.   As always, net proceeds from this tournament provide scholarship dollars for Northwood students.

Survey
The 2007 alumni survey was emailed out to all alumni a few weeks ago.  Thank you to all who have completed the survey thus far.  For those of you who haven’t completed the survey yet, we are planning on keeping it available online until July 1.  Please take the time to complete this 15 minute task to help us understand how we can continuously improve and increase the value of your education at Northwood University.

WebCam
Don’t forget to check out the Sloan Family Building WebCam and watch the progression of the new building on the Midland campus.

Hello from Tom Kavanagh

Dear Northwood Graduates,

I am writing to introduce myself and let all of you know how excited I am to be Northwood’s Vice President of University Advancement.

I come to Northwood from Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan where I served 5 years in the same capacity. My other Advancement positions have been with Hillsdale College and the State Bar of Michigan.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to work in an institution that stands on the principles of freedom in the marketplace, ethics in the work place, and the spirit of entrepreneurship in driving free market economies. Though my start date was May 1st, I have met many staff and colleagues and I have already visited our campuses in West Palm Beach, FL and Cedar Hill, TX. What a complex organization we have! To be honest with all, I have seen and heard evidence that Alumni organizations and meaningful events have gone in fits and starts over the years which are frustrating under any circumstances.  The effectiveness and efficiency of our Alumni Affairs will be a top priority of the Advancement team and we encourage both participation and suggestions from all of you.

My wife, Josie, and I will be moving to Midland as soon as we sell our home in Adrian.  If you know of anyone who would like a very neat and peaceful homestead in Southeast Michigan, we have the perfect deal for them!

We look forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,
Tom Kavanagh
Vice President of University Advancement

What's New in Athletics

The Northwood Athletic season came to an end recently with a pair of Northwood Track and Field student-athletes earning positions in the NCAA Track and Field Championships.  Junior Darrin Tape (Middleville, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg) earned a pair of top-20 national finishes at the event, placing 15th in the 100 meter dash (10.70) and 17th in the 200 (21.60).  On the women’s side, freshman Kylen Cieslak (Livonia, Mich./Churchill) earned a 15th place finish in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 10:34.65.  She is the first distance runner in Northwood history to earn a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Championships.  In other Northwood news, senior women’s golfer Jamie Long (Swartz Creek, Mich.) earned CoSIDA First Team All-Academic District At-Large team honors.  Long recently graduated from Northwood University as the valedictorian of the 2007 class.  She also was named GLIAC Player of the Year at the end of the women’s golf season.
