April 2007

Welcome

Welcome to the April edition of the Northwood University Michigan Campus alumni e-newsletter.  On April 27 Northwood had the pleasure of honoring the 2007 Outstanding Alumni Recipients.  This is definitely the most inspiring alumni event of the year as we pay tribute to the personal and professional accomplishments of these outstanding alumni.  Please click here, Outstanding Alumni Award Press Release, to read the bios on our 2007 recipients, Jenny Anderson, Mike Cassidy, Rick Portwood, Dan Reichard, and Kathy Vertin.

It’s getting warm outside in Michigan (finally) which means it's baseball time!  The alumni office has a suite reserved at Comerica Park on May 8 and a suite at the Great Lakes Loons Minor League Baseball game on July 17 at the new Dow Diamond Stadium in Midland.  There are limited seats available for each event, please contact me as soon as possible if you are interested in attending either event.  Check out our entire events calendar at: Alumni Events Calendar

We have made a few changes to this e-newsletter based on your feedback.  Please continue to provide us with your input as we want to make sure this newsletter is a benefit to you.

What's New in Student Services

Over this past month, the Student Government Association (SGA) has been very busy with the end of the year quickly approaching. The first meeting of the month was replaced by the stuffing of Easter baskets for young underprivileged children within the Midland community. Everyone involved, including SGA E-board members and registered student organization delegates, had a great time and were all contributing a great cause. Almost sixty Easter baskets were then delivered to the children.

Student Government E-board members were also highly involved in the Student Leadership Banquet, which was held Tuesday, April 24th in the NADA. Each E-board member presented leadership awards to those students present. There was a great turn out of students, and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. More than twenty awards were received, and ranged from “Most Promising Freshman Leader” to the “Athlete Impact Award”. The event was a huge success!

April was a busy month for Northwood students; the Student Union was a host to many of these events. Much of the planning for the 2007 NU Style Show took place inside of the Student Union. The Student Union staff held an Easter egg hunt which was part of their Timberwolf Nights program. Also, many of the fraternities and sororities hosted gatherings in the game room.

Upcoming Student Events:

  • NU Pride Day & Outdoor Party May 9

What's New in the DeVos Graduate School

DeVos Graduate Students….Mission Accomplished!

The weekend of April 20-21 proved to be quite eventful for Northwood University DeVos Graduate School of Management Executive and Managerial MBA students.  In accordance with the Northwood University Freedom Seminar, held at the renowned Atheneum Suite Hotel in Greektown (Detroit, MI), DeVos students completed their final graduate hurdle, Integration 2007!

Integration is the final course for each of the DeVos Managerial and Executive MBA curriculums.  It is delivered as an intensive two to three day off-campus residency.  The purpose of this unique course delivery option is to further develop an MBA student’s ability to synthesize and integrate leadership and management skills acquired throughout their respective programs of study.  Managerial MBA students met for their session at Northwood University’s Troy program center.  Executive MBA candidates worked collectively from the Atheneum Suite hotel in Detroit.

Integration was a dynamic opportunity to bring together students from across the state to share, learn, grow, and succeed together as they completed their MBA program of study.  Students worked diligently through the use of case studies, class discussion, faculty facilitation, and key guest speaker presentations at the Northwood University Freedom Seminar.  Guest speakers who played integral roles in the Integration experience included: Keith A. Pretty, J.D. , President and CEO, Northwood University; Marva Collins, Founder, Westside Preparatory School; J Ferron, Price Waterhouse Coopers; and Ron May, Senior Vice President, DTE Energy.

There was much diversity in the presenters and their respective messages, and each served to stimulate dialogue to assist students in further developing critical thinking and problem solving capabilities, and individual self-assessments.  According to Emily Crane, Managerial MBA student, “My Integration experience was wonderful!”  “Rarely do individuals have an opportunity to step away from the hustle and bustle experienced every day to assess personal vision, learning, and implementation for the future.”  “This experience was very motivational and invigorated my passion for work.”

As the Managerial and Executive students wait anxiously to receive faculty and staff feedback regarding their performance at Integration, we at Northwood University and the Richard DeVos Graduate School of Management would like to formally congratulate these individuals on their personal, professional and academic accomplishments.  We also welcome them to their new Northwood University Alumni family!!!
