Specialty programs at Northwood University

As you may know, our Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) is to be globally recognized as one of the foremost institutions in the development of leaders, managers and entrepreneurs.

The enhancement of the impact and reputation of our specialty programs will be vital in the growth of our brand and accomplishment of our BHAG.  Specialty programs at Northwood University have a rich tradition of blending the practical and theoretical components of education into powerful experiences which sets Northwood University apart from virtually any other academic institution.  Our students, working in conjunction with specialty department chairs and business leaders, never cease to amaze me with their creativity and knowledge.

  • Students on our Florida campus have been involved in programs ranging from the 2007 Super Bowl to the largest annual auto show in Palm Beach County.
  • Michigan campus students yearly host events ranging from the world’s largest outdoor auto show in the fall to a spring style show.
  • Each year our Texas campus students sponsor events ranging from fashion shows to a spring “iron chef” competition.

We must leverage these unique and powerful advantages of a Northwood education to an even greater degree in the future.  I have asked Dr. Tim Nash to assume the newly created role of Vice President of Graduate and Specialty Programs this academic year. He will assist in moving these programs to an even higher level of prominence.  Our eight specialty programs include Automotive Marketing; Aftermarket Management;  Hotel, Restaurant &  Resort Management;  Entertainment, Sport & Promotion Management; Fashion Marketing & Management; Entrepreneurship, Banking & Finance; and Management Information Systems.  Dr. John Jasinski, our campus provosts, academic deans, specialty department chairs and University College will also be part of the team that enriches the specialty curricula.

To accomplish this end, we will be enhancing our internship and placement efforts by program and by operating unit; developing plans for enhancing industry contacts, industry exposure and the possible establishment of national advisory boards for each specialty program; helping with curriculum consistency and program assessment; and investigating the possible implementation of seminal events for each specialty program.

Our BHAG is real and it is achievable!  You will receive regular updates on specialty programs and their successes.  I would like to personally thank all of you for what we have accomplished and what we will accomplish together in the future, both with our specialty programs and our university goals overall.
