Curtains Close on Another Successful NU Style Show

Northwood University’s 13th Annual Style Show took place on Friday, April 4, 2014, in the Hach Student Life Center on Northwood’s Michigan Campus located at 4000 Whiting Drive. The event was planned and executed by the executive board, which consisted of 18 hardworking students coming from diverse majors. The executive board dedicated their personal time over the past academic year to plan out everything from the theme of the show, selecting clothing from the vendors, music, choreography, ticket sales and fundraising.

This year’s theme of the show, “Runway Rhythm,” was based on the relationship between music and fashion and how different artists such as, Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Kesha, the Beatles and Madonna dictate fashion trends through their music. The show featured five segments, each accompanied by its own style in relation to the music, hair, makeup and attitude that brought the theme to life. This year there were 18 vendors who sponsored the show and helped it come together with unique fashions worn by the models including: the Buckle, Andrea’s Closet, My Secret Garden, the Gap, Banana Republic and Athalia’s Boutique. Unique jewelry designs were also provided by local boutiques. This year Dare to Bee Different, Athena’s Salon stylist Ethan Cooper and Structures Salon created unique hair and makeup looks worn by the models and executive board members. Executed to a tee, the show came together and transformed the Hach Student Center to look like a New York City fashion show. 

Runway Rhythm was fortunate to have the pleasure of featuring America’s Next Top Model Winner Naima Mora. A meet and greet combined with a book signing was held before and after the show for guests to have an opportunity to meet Mora. An interview was conducted on stage between the public relations chair and Mora as the show’s opener.

There were approximately 600 guests in attendance for the two shows who were thoroughly impressed with the execution of a perfect show. Fifty-five models graced the stage along with six student designers who showcased their unique designs on their models. Northwood does not have a design program, which makes this show an exciting opportunity for the “designers” to publicize their creativity.

Jill Ouellette, professor and Style Show advisor, stated, “I couldn’t be happier with the show and the hard work of our students. The results were better than ever and support from our community has been wonderful. My heartfelt appreciation goes out to all who helped make the show such a success!” All in all, this year’s production was one to remember not only for the special guest but also for all who attended the shows.
