The Fashion Marketing & Management (FMM) degree focuses on the highly complex world of fashion marketing. Fashion courses include textiles, fashion promotions, history of costume, buying, theory and practice, and apparel analysis. The program includes a career-related externship.

We Know Style

Immerse yourself in fashion through this outstanding fashion merchandising program. Be a merchandise buyer through simulations and case studies, analyze trends, evaluate textiles, engage in the industry through an internship or study abroad, be part of our NU Style Show, or reach beyond yourself as you take part in our TOMS Shoes™ chapter.

What will I study?

This comprehensive curriculum provides an excellent foundation for a variety of careers in the apparel, accessories, and soft goods industries. You begin the very first day of your college career with an introductory course then continue on with textiles, visual merchandising and promotions, history of fashion, apparel analysis and merchandise buying. Finally you will bring your course work and experiences together in a senior capstone course. In addition to your specific major courses, students have many exciting options for their general education and higher level business courses.

Our courses strive to engage students in a variety of ways through on-line exercises, off campus excursions, and service-learning along with current and highly relevant topics such as the environment and societal marketing issues.

Internships

In order to round out your college experience, a 400 hour internship is required. Students are fully immersed in a job of their choice. Nordstrom, Buckle, Victoria’s Secret, Koastal Konnections, Burberry, and Nike are just few of the many companies with whom we connect students.

You may even study abroad in major international fashion capitals such London, Paris, or Italy. Better yet, travel to several countries in one semester through our Semester Abroad for a full immersion experience.

Professional Development Outside the Classroom

Show your creativity, develop your leadership skills, and network with professionals in the industry. Whatever your talents and skills, we have a place for you in our FMM program. Become a member of our NU Style Show Executive Board and engage in the highlight of year as students produce a high-end and exciting fashion show. Lead a TOMS™ Shoes event or travel with us to the MAGIC Show in Las Vegas. This major trade and buying show exposes students to all facets of the industry as well as opportunities to network with professionals from all over the world.

These professional events are geared toward developing truly relevant, professional, and marketable skills required for any career in the industry.

Fashion Careers

Whether on campus or study aboard, this program will prepare you for a variety of opportunities in the apparel, accessories, and soft goods industries. Interested in owning your own boutique? Or becoming a merchandise buyer or visual merchandiser? How about continuing on to a graduate degree, design school, or working for an organization you already know and love? Northwood University alumni work in a variety of fashion related careers from merchandise buyer and allocation, to marketing and event planning, from entrepreneurship to store management with organizations both large and small, from coast to coast.

Northwood Style Show

The Northwood University Style Show is a dramatic and fascinating show and is one of the most anticipated fashion events in Mid-Michigan. A dynamic display of creativity and showmanship accent every detail of the night's events.

The show takes the effort of over 20 committee members approximately nine months to prepare for the event. Students from every major on campus participate and models have numbered from 45-70 in any given year. Our attendance has risen greatly over the years and we've experienced exponential growth.

This completely student-produced event is truly the highlight of the year for the Northwood students and will continue to provide an excellent "hands-on" learning opportunity for years to come.
