MIDLAND, MI – Northwood University’s Board of Trustees elected Grand Rapids native and entrepreneur Daniel (Dan) G. DeVos as board chair at its annual meeting on May 17. DeVos, who served as vice chair during the previous term, is a 1980 Northwood alumnus and national co-chair with his wife, Pamella, of Northwood’s capital campaign.
DeVos is chairman, president and chief executive officer of DP Fox Ventures, LLC, a diversified management company with interests in real estate, transportation, and sports and entertainment. He also serves as chair of the Orlando Magic (NBA) and president and chief executive officer of the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL). In addition, DeVos is chairman and chief executive officer of Georgian International, Ltd.; president and chief executive officer of Fox Motor Group; and a partner in CWD Real Estate Investments. He also is a member of the board of directors of Alticor, Amway’s parent company.
“I am honored and excited to serve as board chair at Northwood,” DeVos said. “As an alumnus, I can speak firsthand to the quality and substance of a Northwood education. There are a lot of fine business schools in the world today but very few can say they offer the kind of industry-driven and experiential learning opportunities around the globe that Northwood does.”
According to Northwood University President and CEO Keith A. Pretty, the election of DeVos as board chair times very well with the University’s growth curve.
“This is a very exciting time at Northwood and we are elated to have Dan DeVos as our board chair,” Pretty remarked. “We have a variety of new degree offerings in the ‘pipeline’ and have seen quite a rise in enrollment commitments and student inquiries so Dan’s leadership comes at a perfect time. We look forward to working with him and the entire board on taking Northwood to the next level.”
DeVos earned a bachelor’s degree in 1980 and an honorary doctor of laws in 1999 from Northwood University. Over the years Northwood has honored him as an Outstanding Alumni awardee, Outstanding Business Leader and Automobile Dealer Education awardee. He has served on Northwood’s Board of Trustees since 1997.
Prior to joining DP Fox Ventures, DeVos was with Amway Corporation from 1980-2000 in a variety of capacities including vice president-Pacific and vice president of corporate affairs. He currently serves on Alticor’s Board of Directors and is a member of its audit committee.
Much in keeping with the community-focused commitment of his parents and the entire DeVos family, DeVos along with his wife, Pamella, have worked hard to give back to west Michigan during the past two decades. This work has included: Grand Rapids Symphony, past chair; Grand Rapids Art Museum; DeVos Children’s Hospital; Children’s Miracle Network, co-chair; Frederick Meijer Gardens; Hope Network; and the Grand Valley University Foundation. This commitment also extends to the Upper Peninsula as Northern Michigan University’s past chairman.
DeVos and his wife live in Grand Rapids with their three children.
