Elvin Rodriguez, Collegiate Division Player of the Year Award

July 18, 2013

CEDAR HILL, Texas –Knights shortstop Elvin Rodriguez has been honored as the 2013 Collegiate Player of the Year by the Metroplex Hall-Ruggles chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR).

A senior from Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Rodriguez was the Red River Athletic Conference Player of the Year.  He was also named to the NAIA All-American first team.  Rodriguez is only the second Knights player to be named an NAIA first team All-American, joining former catcher Johnny Aldaz.  He is also the first Northwood player to win SABR’s Collegiate Player of the Year Award.

Rodriguez helped lead the Knights to their first ever trip to the NAIA World Series and an end-of-season ranking as the #6 NAIA team in the nation. The senior hit .360 on the year, with 50 RBI.  He also scored 46 runs, had a .540 slugging percentage, and stole 22 bases.

After graduation Rodriguez signed to play professional baseball with the Rockford Aviators of the Frontier League.

“Elvin is a great baseball player and a fine young man,” Northwood Head Baseball Coach Jeremy Kennedy commented.  “He is a credit to his team and to our university.”
