CEDAR HILL, Texas – Northwood University is proud to announce that Captain Samuel Brown will deliver the commencement speech for the Northwood TX campus on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at 2:00PM in the Ellis Davis Field House at the Jesse Owens Memorial Complex. The title of his speech is “Be a Courageous Leader”. At the commencement he will be also be vested with an honorary Doctor of Laws.
Born and raised in central Arkansas, Capt. Brown is the eldest of five children, son of Scott and Tanya Brown of Papillion, NE and the grandson of Margie Brown Jones and Gail Jones of Conway, AR. Capt. Brown exercised his desire to be a leader as an active member of multiple clubs and student organizations while in high school. Following graduation from Conway High School in 2002, he continued his education and further refined his leadership skills at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, NY. While there, Brown led the varsity crew team to multiple achievements including an invitation to the collegiate national championship regatta.
In 2006, he was commissioned as an Infantry 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. In June of 2008, as Infantry Platoon Leader for the 3rd Platoon C-Company, he was deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan where he led his soldiers on multiple combat missions before being critically injured by an IED roadside bomb the following September. His evacuation brought him to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas where he spent nearly three years undergoing numerous operations and countless hours of therapy to restore his health. While there he met his wife Amy whom he married in 2009.
Capt. Brown’s proud service was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Army Accommodation Medal with “Valor” Device, Global War on Terrorism Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Ribbon, Air Assault Badge, Airborne Badge and Ranger Tab.
Following five years of proud service to his country as a member of the U.S. Army, today Brown serves as the Director of Veteran and Family Support of Allies in Service, a 501(c)(3) organization assisting veterans and their families as they reintegrate into the Dallas community. He and his wife are the proud parents of Roman, who was born in September 2011.
