CEDAR HILL, Texas–Northwood University was honored to have Derrick James, the coach of USA’s National Olympic Boxing Champion Errol Spence Jr., on Thursday, September 13.

According to Mr. James, “Ninety percent of boxing is mental training. Always be present and mentally aware of what’s going on around you at all times.” He told the students that everyone has a purpose and you can achieve anything with desire and the ability to retain a goal.

Students asked questions from how to stay fit; to how long he has known Errol Jr., as well as how to become successful. “If you want to become successful, surround yourself with successful people”, says Mr. James, “Do your best every time to receive the results you desire.”

The students were on the edge of their chairs listening to the wise words of Derrick James.   Prof. Diane Feffer, the marketing professor, stated “I try to look for speakers that students can identify with and enjoy listening to.”

Overall the students enjoyed Mr. James lecture. Afterwards he even gave one on one tips on how to get into shape and stay motivated. Derrick James said, “I hope the students take working hard, focusing, and taking a challenge to become successful. Never be satisfied.”
