Northwood University Florida's Entrepreneurship Society recently hosted a Pitch Competition which allowed students the opportunity to competitively present business proposals to a panel of judges who posed as venture capitalists.
The competition was designed to prepare students for real-world presentations. The following business concepts were included: gift basket ‘welcome home’ business, corporate investment company, technological concepts relating to improved centralized sports websites and free online media playlists.
The judges included Jennifer McFarland, Julia Hansen and Cy Rosen. After deliberating at length following the presentations, they awarded first place honors to contestant Jordan Rawlyk, whose pitch related to a web based gift card exchange concept. His prize was the choice of an iPad or, ironically, a $500 cash gift card.
"Part of the value proposition of the Pitch Competition is that students learn to prepare proper presentations, and they then received constructive comments from the judges relating to business model improvement," said Adjunct Professor George Stamas who spearheaded the event. Annual Entrepreneurship Society programs include roundtables, pitch competitions, and more.
