CEDAR HILL – Lynn Brooks is the Section Chief of Gynecology Surgical Services at the Dallas Veterans' Medical Center, but wants to advance her career and prepare for waves of change coming from health care reform.

That's why she's one of nearly 40 students enrolled in the first cohort of Northwood University's 27-month, part-time master of business administration degree (MBA), which enables working professionals the opportunity to develop the skills to advance their careers. Northwood's MBA program is part of the DeVos Graduate School, which is new to Dallas, yet well-established at Northwood's Michigan and Switzerland campuses with a combined 17 years of course offerings. The classes are taught in a cohort format, which allows for a small, supportive and interactive learning environment with other working professionals.

"Health care reform is being hotly debated in Congress, and we need many changes in how health care is being delivered to our citizens. Because change is inevitable, I want to be in a position of playing a greater role in helping make decisions that affect care given to our veterans here at the Dallas VA Medical Center," Dr. Brooks said. "By developing the skill set acquired by obtaining my MBA, not only will I be able to participate in decisions directly affecting patient care, but also I will be in a better position for career advancement."

Dr. Brooks describes herself as "Texan through and through." She was born in East Texas, raised in El Paso and moved to Galveston in 1984 to attend the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. There she remained 23 years until moving to Cedar Hill two years ago. Dr. Brooks also has degrees in nursing from Hotel Dieu School of Nursing in El Paso and a bachelors of science in nursing from the University of Texas at El Paso. Dr. Brooks was in private practice in the Houston area for about 15 years before moving to the Dallas area to work for the Dallas Veterans' Medical Center.

"I live in Cedar Hill, and Northwood seemed to be the obvious choice for me," Dr. Brooks said, who just bought a house in DeSoto. "Northwood has a great reputation and I was excited to be accepted into the program."

Dr. Brooks called Northwood's faculty "inspiring," and expressed appreciation for their intellectual stimulation, the beautiful campus and challenging curriculum.

"I'm very proud to be a member of the first MBA class here at Northwood," Dr. Brooks said. "I would very much encourage anyone who is considering further study in business, beyond an undergraduate degree, to strongly consider Northwood's MBA program."

Applications are being accepted for Northwood's next MBA program cohort. Inquire by phone: 1-800-927-9663; by e-mail mbatx@northwood.edu; or through the Web site: www.northwood.edu.
