Greetings:

Northwood University transforms lives. As one of the foremost educational institutions in the world dedicated to free enterprise, everything that happens on our campuses and in our classrooms has one overarching mission -- to develop the future leaders of a global, free-enterprise society.

We are well into the celebrations of our golden anniversary. Our cover story recognizes people and families who believe in The Northwood Idea -- so much so that through their support we were able to build our beautiful campuses. It is no secret that our residential campuses, Florida, Michigan, and Texas, are unique among colleges. For 50 years we have remained true to our architect and master planner, Alden B. Dow's, vision for the grounds and buildings -- secluded settings, rich in architectural beauty while maximizing the natural features of the land. We think Mr. Dow would be pleased to see how we've grown.

Enterprise comes in many forms, large and small, in villages and cities, close to home and across the globe. This year the Texas Campus hosted the Peace Through Business initiative for women entrepreneurs from Afghanistan, and new this year, Rwanda. These brave women took their lessons seriously and are returning home with business plans. These small businesses will have a big impact on their families and villages. We were honored to have former First Lady Laura Bush attend the commencement ceremonies.

We are pleased to profile two alumni-driven companies -- both in the food business, but at the opposite ends of the spectrum. Thistledown Farms grows organic crops, selling to food processors nationally and internationally. The mother and daughter-in-law are Northwood graduates and the son is just finishing is degree with us. Sammich 'N Sudz is a gourmet sandwich shop featuring local crops and products. It has just one location, but its two entrepreneurial owners, both graduates of Northwood through our Adult Degree Program and currently earning their Masters of Business Administration degree at our DeVos Graduate School of Management, know how to grow from one location to many.

In the last issue of the magazine, we were pleased to report one of our graduates, Emily Bourne, was prominently featured on CNBC. Fox Business Channel took notice and wanted to let its viewers know about the good things happening at Northwood. You will find details of that interview on page 21.

These are good days at Northwood University. The features and articles in this fall 2009 issue are just a snapshot of what's happening across our system. Remember, you are always welcome back on campus.
