Answers:
Q: How much time must I commit to the program each week?
A: Depending on the course, the average allocation is between 10-20 hours per week to complete assigned coursework and reading materials. This time can be scheduled at your convenience as long as materials meet required deadlines.
Q: What is simulation and how will participating benefit me?
A: Simulation is arguably the most personally and professionally "transforming" event in our MBA program for our students. It is the only event where students from most of our programs convene for a six-day intense business experience. Teams of approximately 16-18 students form business organizations and operate like real companies. Each business has a president, three vice-presidents and a variety of marketing, finance and operations personnel. Consistent with our MBA program objectives, the focus of this simulation class is just as much on students' behavior as it is their financial and problem-solving process. It is the perfect opportunity for students to be proactive leaders and utilize the technical skills they have learned throughout the MBA program.
Q: How will I learn the knowledge I need to apply to the case studies?
A: The case study provides a vehicle for identifying problems, analyzing them, deriving solutions and considering the difficulties in implementing these solutions. These last two aspects of the case study method are important. There are two sorts of case studies, historical case studies and live action case studies. In a live case study, you link the concepts you study with the reality of policies, practices and issues within a live organization, carry out a direct investigation and record observations and collect data. In a historical case study, which may well be based on a real situation, the information is provided for you. The cases you will consider will be historical.
Q: Will the case experiences transfer to my own career?
A: The purpose of DeVos is to create highly effective executives and managers through a process of personal and professional transformation and building the skills to:
- Find and fix problems.
- Identify and capitalize on opportunities.
- Create a vision and influence others to follow.
- Raise the performance of subordinates, peers and superiors.
The DeVos MBA Programs provide a perspective beyond that which is normally achieved through experience. The ability to see from the perspective of different disciplines, different industries, different cultures, different geographies, and even different points across the value chain within an industry is what enhances the capabilities of future leaders.
Q: How can I develop more expertise in a specific discipline?
A: The DeVos MBA Programs are designed to develop skill sets in several academic disciplines applied through an extensive curriculum that includes strategy, leadership, finance, operations, and economics.
Q: Why does the program continue throughout the summers?
A: Most employers and students want a flexible MBA program that will be completed within the proximity of two years. Without summer semesters offered, some of the programs would continue beyond the two years.
Q: When should I schedule vacations during the program?
A: It is your obligation and responsibility to fulfill all assignment deadlines. Between semesters would be the perfect time; given there is no required course work during this time.
